Sacred to the Father-gods of antiquity (Amoun-Ra in Egypt, the God of Spring) because the spring equinox marked the solar year's beginning, the Father principle reasserting itself over winter darkness

Crowley places him in the sign of Spring to show that true power is the ability to initiate and then direct, not merely to explode.

Jungian Meaning: Aries is the Ego at the moment of its first assertion — the "I AM" that establishes the individual as a distinct being. It is the Hero archetype setting out before experience has tempered courage with wisdom. Cardinal Fire produces a psychic energy entirely concerned with self-establishment: the separation from the undifferentiated (Pisces, the ocean that preceded it) into the assertive "I." Developmentally, this corresponds to the infant's first dawning of selfhood — the organism recognising itself as distinct from the world and pushing outward against it. The shadow is this impulse inflated: the Hero who has not learned that other people exist, the will that cannot receive, the I AM that becomes I AM ALONE.
