Mercury is the Messenger — intellect, communication, language, and the capacity to translate between the conscious and the unconscious. Attributed to Hod (Splendour), he is the analytical mind at its most articulate. His Major Arcana card is The Magus (I).

Rulership: Mercury rules two signs. In Gemini (Mutable Air), Mercury expresses his communicative, versatile, and intellectually agile nature — the quick-witted messenger darting between ideas. In Virgo (Mutable Earth), Mercury expresses his analytical, discriminating, and service-oriented nature — the meticulous craftsman who refines raw material into useful form. Mercury is also traditionally exalted in Virgo, where the intellectual function reaches its most refined and practically productive expression.

Jungian Meaning: Mercury is the archetype of psychic mobility — the Transcendent Function that moves freely between levels of the psyche, carrying messages, making connections, and translating the untranslatable. He is both the Logos (the Word that creates) and the Trickster (the awareness that every word is a limitation).
