Water is the receptive, emotional, dissolving element — feeling, intuition, and the unconscious depths. It corresponds to the first letter Heh of the Tetragrammaton and the Qabalistic world of Briah (Creation). Where Fire projects outward, Water draws inward; where Fire separates and ignites, Water merges and dissolves. Water is the medium of life — every living cell is a vessel of water, and every emotion is a tide.
In nature, Water is the ocean, the rain, the underground river. It seeks the lowest point, it takes the shape of whatever contains it, and over time it erodes the hardest stone. The alchemists called the watery principle Salt: the passive, feminine, crystallizing essence that receives the fire's impulse and gives it tangible form.
Thoth Tarot: The suit of Cups carries the element of Water. The elemental Water itself is attributed to The Hanged Man (XII) through the Hebrew letter Mem — another of the three Mother Letters. Mem means "Water," and the card depicts the suspended, surrendered state that is Water's essential gesture: the willingness to be acted upon, to dissolve, to let go. The three Water signs represent the three modes of emotional experience: Cancer protects and nurtures (Cardinal), Scorpio transforms and penetrates (Fixed), and Pisces dissolves and transcends (Mutable). The Court Cards of Cups follow the Tetragrammaton through the watery element.
Jungian Meaning: In Jungian terms, Water corresponds to the feeling function — the psychic capacity that evaluates experience through attraction and repulsion, assigning personal value and emotional significance. Water is the unconscious itself: the dark, deep, oceanic realm from which dreams arise and into which consciousness dissolves each night. The shadow of Water is emotional flooding — the loss of Ego boundaries, the inability to distinguish one's own feelings from those of others, and the passive surrender to moods that the Ego mistakes for fate.
