The Art card represents the Consummation of the Royal Marriage which took place in Atu VI (The Lovers). It is the final stage of the alchemical Great Work. The design is a complex visual matrix of equilibrium and counter-change:
- The Androgyne Figure: The black King and white Queen from The Lovers are now fused into a single, androgynous figure.
- The Counter-Changed Heads and Arms: The equilibrium is carried out completely. The white woman now has a black head (wearing a golden crown with a silver band), and the black king has a white head (wearing a silver crown with a golden fillet). The white head on the right is extended by a white arm on the left, which holds the cup. The black head on the left has a black arm on the right, holding the lance (which has become a torch).
- The Fire and Water: The torch pours forth burning blood (Fire) and the cup pours forth white gluten (Water) into the central cauldron. The fire burns up the water; the water extinguishes the fire. At the bottom, they are harmoniously mingled as a crude symbol of spiritual satisfaction.
- The Golden Cauldron: The cauldron is golden or solar, because the Sun is the Father of all Life and presides over distillation.
- The Raven on the Skull: Resting on the cauldron is a raven perched upon a skull (caput mortuum). This symbolizes that the formula of continued life is death/putrefaction (the stage achieved in Atu XIII).
- The Rainbows and the Arrow: A stream of light rises from the cauldron, becoming two rainbows that form the cape of the androgyne. In the center, an arrow shoots upwards, symbolizing the spiritualization of the result of the Great Work.
- The Animals Aligned: The Red Lion has become white (increased in size), and the White Eagle has become red. They have exchanged their natures in alliance.
- The Green Robe: The robe of the figure is green, symbolizing vegetable growth (raising mineral to vegetable life), an alchemical allegory.
- The V.I.T.R.I.O.L. Inscription: Behind the figure is a glory bearing a seven-word Latin inscription. The initials of these words spell V.I.T.R.I.O.L.:
- Visita (Visit)
- Interiora (the interior parts)
- Terrae (of the earth)
- Rectificando (by rectification)
- Invenies (thou shalt find)
- Occultum (the hidden)
- Lapidem (stone)

Crowley changed the name of this card from "Temperance" to "Art" to reflect the "Royal Art" of Alchemy. This card is the complement and fulfillment of Gemini (The Lovers). It pertains to Sagittarius, the archer, represented by the arrow piercing the rainbow (the path of Sagittarius leads from the Moon of Yesod to the Sun of Tiphareth, the rainbow path of Qesheth).
The card depicts the ultimate alchemical operation: Solve et Coagula. The contradictory elements have been broken down in the cauldron and are now being synthesized. The central key to this process is the inscription V.I.T.R.I.O.L. In modern usage, vitriol is a harsh acid (sulphate), but alchemically, the word represents a perfectly balanced combination of the three fundamental principles: Sulphur, Mercury, and Salt.
The counsel to "visit the interior of the earth" is the formula for finding the True Will. The critical word is Rectificando (rectification)—the process of continuously refining the "new living substance" (the soul) until it becomes the Universal Medicine or the "Philosopher's Stone." This Stone is the ultimate, indestructible vehicle of the True Will. The arrow shooting upward is the purest glyph of Mercury, showing that once this internal rectification is achieved, the energy issues forth with absolute, rectilinear certainty.

Art is the archetype of Synthesis, the Alchemical Coniunctio, and the ultimate goal of Individuation. While The Lovers (Atu VI) represented the realization of the internal split (the conscious Ego vs. the unconscious Shadow/Anima), Art represents the successful integration of those warring opposites into a completely new, unified psychological entity (the Androgyne).
The V.I.T.R.I.O.L. formula is the exact psychological prescription for shadow work: "Visit the interior of the earth" means turning your gaze inward to the darkest, most primitive parts of your own Unconscious. "By rectification" means doing the hard, analytic work of understanding and integrating those dark impulses (the raven on the skull) rather than repressing them. "Thou shalt find the hidden stone" means discovering the indestructible, authentic Self.
The visual exchange of colors (the black head with the white arm; the Red Lion turning white) illustrates the Ego and the Unconscious no longer fighting for dominance. They have voluntarily exchanged their powers to create a balanced, self-sustaining psychological system. The resulting rainbow and upward arrow signify the liberation of pure, directed psychological energy (True Will) that is finally free from internal conflict, allowing the individual to aim their life force with absolute clarity and purpose.
The Hebrew letter Samekh, meaning "Prop" or "Support," reveals the card's structural function in the psyche. The prop is what holds something up — a tent-pole, a scaffolding, a backbone. In Jungian terms, Samekh represents the central axis of the integrated personality: the living connection between the Ego and the Self that supports the entire psychic structure. When the Coniunctio is achieved — when the opposites are truly married rather than merely coexisting — the personality acquires an internal support that is independent of external circumstances. The individual no longer needs external validation, ideology, or role to hold themselves upright; the prop is within.
Sagittarius, ruled by Jupiter, is the sign of the Archer — the centaur who is both animal and human, aiming an arrow at a distant target. In Jungian terms, Sagittarius represents the teleological function of the psyche: the innate drive toward meaning, purpose, and the distant goal of wholeness. Jupiter's expansive, optimistic energy gives this card a quality of supreme confidence — the Art card depicts not a tentative, anxious synthesis but a triumphant one. The arrow shooting upward from the cauldron is the Sagittarian arrow: psychic energy that has been refined through the alchemical process (putrefaction in Death, dissolution in the Hanged Man) and now flies with "absolute, rectilinear certainty" toward its target. This is what Jung called the individuation drive operating at full power — the Self pulling the personality toward its own completion.
Path 25, connecting Yesod (the Foundation, the unconscious, the Moon) to Tiphareth (Beauty, the integrated Self, the Sun), is perhaps the most psychologically significant path on the entire Tree. It is the direct vertical axis between the lunar unconscious and the solar Self — the "Middle Pillar" in its most critical segment. In Jungian terms, this path represents the process by which unconscious contents (dreams, intuitions, synchronicities, symptoms) are brought into conscious relationship with the Self. The Art card stands on this path because true synthesis — the marriage of opposites — is precisely the work of translating between the unconscious (Yesod/Moon) and consciousness (Tiphareth/Sun). The androgyne figure, with its counter-changed colors and its rainbow cloak, is the living proof that this translation has been successfully accomplished.
