The Sun

生命之树路径 30太阳

希伯来字母 · Resh (ר) - Meaning: "Head"

画面与符号

太阳与儿童意象呈现光明、开放和生命的再生。

英文原文 · English source

The Sun is one of the simplest and most direct cards in the deck. In heraldic language, it represents "the Sun, charged with a rose, on a mount vert" (a direct reference to the Coat-of-Arms of Crowley's own family). The imagery is radiant and liberated:

  • The Sun and The Rose: The massive Sun dominates the sky, representing Heru-ra-ha, the Lord of the New Aeon. In the center of the Sun is a Rose, representing the flowering of the solar influence and the expansion of the Rosy Cross.
  • The Twelve Rays: The Sun's rays are twelve in number. This represents not only the signs of the Zodiac but also the most sacred title of the holy Ancient Ones, Hua (which has the numerical value of 12). The rays pierce in every direction, showing that the creative energy is no longer limited by mundane law.
  • The Zodiac: Surrounding the whole picture are the signs of the Zodiac in their normal position (Aries rising in the East, etc.). Crowley notes the Zodiac is a "childish representation" of the body of Nuith (infinite space), used here merely for convenience of description.
  • The Green Mound (Mount Vert): At the bottom is a green mound representing the fertile earth, its shape aspiring to the heavens.
  • The Red Wall: Encircling the top of the mound is a red wall. This indicates that the aspiration and freedom of the new Aeon do not mean the absence of control. The wall emphasizes that the formula of the Rose and Cross is still valid in terrestrial matters, but is now in close alliance with the celestial.
  • The Color Exchange: An important alchemical "fire-change" has occurred: the mound is green (where one would expect red/earth/fire), and the wall is red (where one would expect green/blue/water). This "something rich and strange" indicates a great advance in the adjustment of the new Aeon.
  • The Twin Children: Outside the wall, dancing in the light, are the twin children (male and female, eternally young, shameless, and innocent). They represent the next stage of human evolution, enjoying complete freedom.
  • The Old Rosy Cross: At the feet of the children lies the traditional sign of the old Aeon (the combined Rose and Cross). They have arisen from it, and it now serves merely as their foundation or support.

秘传含义

对应太阳与 Resh,连接荣耀和基础,表现意识照亮经验的力量。

英文原文 · English source

Attributed to the letter Resh (Head) and the Sun, this card represents the complete emancipation of the human race. The old restrictions of sin and death have been abolished. The card represents Heru-ra-ha (the active, solar aspect of Horus) in his manifestation to humanity as the Sun spiritual, moral, and physical. He is the Lord of Light, Life, Liberty, and Love.

The card fundamentally symbolizes the broadening of the old formula of the Rose and Cross. In the old Aeon (Osiris), the Cross had four rigid arms, representing limitation, sacrifice, and the heavy restriction of mundane law. In the Sun card, the Cross has expanded into the Sun itself. The four arms are gone; the creative energy expands freely without the burden of guilt. Crowley states that mankind has landed itself in a dreadful mire of psychopathology because it clings to the "tiresome and tough prejudices" of the past. The Sun represents the pioneers of the New Aeon putting this right through unabashed, innocent joy.

荣格视角

象征较清晰的自我认识和整合后的活力。光明并不要求否认阴影,而是更能面对它。

The Sun is the archetype of the True Self, Conscious Realization, and the Divine Child. It is the ultimate psychological victory over the dark, devouring, and confusing forces of the previous card (The Moon).

The twin children dancing naked in the light represent the Ego and the Anima/Animus existing in a state of perfect, unashamed integration. They have moved beyond the "superego" (the internalized, oppressive rules of society and religion, represented by the old Rose/Cross at their feet). Psychologically, this is the state of Individuation where a person no longer operates out of fear, guilt, or the need to constantly defend a fragile Persona.

The wall around the hill is a crucial psychological detail: absolute freedom is not the same as chaotic regression. The Ego still maintains a healthy boundary (the wall) to function in the real world, but this boundary is no longer a prison. The Sun represents a state of "Flow" and radiant self-actualization, where the individual's inner Truth (The Sun) is so powerful and clear that it naturally nourishes everything it touches.

The Hebrew letter Resh, meaning "Head," is the counterpart of Qoph (Back of the Head) — where the Moon was the blind spot behind consciousness, the Sun is the face of consciousness, radiant and fully visible. In Jungian terms, Resh represents the Ego at its healthiest and most integrated: not inflated, not deflated, but simply present — the head that faces the world openly, with nothing to hide. The Head is also the seat of identity — the face that others see, the self that one owns without shame. The Sun card is the Ego that has survived the Dark Night of the Moon and emerged with its identity clarified rather than destroyed.

The Sun as planetary attribution needs little symbolic elaboration — it is the universal archetype of consciousness, vitality, and the creative source. In Jungian terms, the Sun is the Self made visible to the Ego: the direct experience of one's own centre, no longer mediated by symbols, dreams, or projections, but felt as simple, immediate, radiant aliveness. The Rose in the centre of the Sun adds the dimension of unfolding — the Self is not a fixed point but a perpetual blossoming. The twelve rays reaching in all directions show that this consciousness is not self-enclosed but generative — it illuminates and nourishes everything within its sphere.

Path 30, connecting Hod (Splendour, Mercury, the rational intellect) to Yesod (the Foundation, the Moon, the unconscious), is the path that bridges analytical understanding and instinctual depth at the lower levels of the Tree. In Jungian terms, it represents the integration of thinking and feeling, of logos and eros, at the level of everyday psychological functioning. The Sun stands on this path because it is the light that makes this integration possible: when consciousness is strong and clear (Solar), the intellect (Hod) and the unconscious (Yesod) can communicate without distortion, fear, or mutual suspicion. The twin children dancing outside the wall are the image of this harmony — masculine and feminine, conscious and unconscious, playing together in the open air.
