In this card, Crowley found it necessary to completely depart from the tradition of the "Last Judgment" card (which depicted an angel blowing a trumpet over opening graves) to carry on the true esoteric tradition into the modern age. The card is a direct adaptation of the ancient Egyptian Stele of Revealing.
- The Body of Nuith: Arching around the top of the card is the massive, starry body of the goddess Nuith (Nuit). She represents the category of unlimited, infinite possibility.
- The Globe of Fire (Hadit): At the center, serving as her mate, is Hadit. He is represented by a winged globe of fire. He is the ubiquitous point-of-view, the only philosophically tenable conception of Reality, representing eternal energy and the power of "Going."
- The Child Horus (Heru-ra-ha): As a result of the marriage of infinite space (Nuith) and infinite energy (Hadit), the child Horus is born. He is shown seated centrally, coming forth in golden light, representing the New Aeon.
- The Twin Forms of Horus: Horus is a double god. His extroverted, active form is Ra-hoor-khuit (the seated, hawk-headed figure of martial, solar force). His passive, introverted form is Hoor-pa-kraat (the Babe in the Egg of Blue, or the God of Silence), which is implied in the synthesis of the imagery.
- The Hebrew Letter Shin: At the very bottom of the card, the letter Shin itself is drawn in a form suggestive of a flower.
- The Three Human Figures: Within the three Yods (points) that make up the letter Shin, three human figures are shown arising to partake in the Essence of the new Aeon.
- The Sign of Libra: Behind the letter Shin is a symbolic representation of the Sign of Libra. This is the foreshadowing of the next Aeon (the Aeon of Maat, goddess of Justice/Balance), which will follow the present Aeon of Horus in approximately 2,000 years.

Attributed to the letter Shin (Fire) and the planet Pluto, this card represents the catastrophic transition from the Aeon of Osiris to the Aeon of Horus. The old card represented the destruction of the world by Fire. Crowley asserts this destruction already took place in the year 1904, when the fiery god Horus took the place of the airy god Osiris in the East as Hierophant.
Therefore, the new card exhibits the message of the new Aeon to earth. It is not a card of finality or apocalyptic death, but a card of continuous evolution. It demands a complete re-evaluation of all spiritual, moral, and material events. The time for the birth of an Aeon is indicated by great concentration of political power with the accompanying improvements in the means of travel and communication (the winged globe of Hadit), alongside a general advance in philosophy and science. It is a highly optimistic card, indicating that the "Dark Ages" are behind us and we have "brighter torches and more torch-bearers" to light the way forward.

The Aeon represents the archetype of the Paradigm Shift and the birth of the New Self. While Death (Atu XIII) represents the destruction of a specific psychological complex or identity, The Aeon represents a massive, foundational shift in the entire operating system of the psyche.
The replacement of the Christian "Last Judgment" (driven by guilt, sin, and the fear of eternal punishment) with the Egyptian "Stele of Revealing" represents the psychological movement from a punishing Superego to an empowering, self-actualized Ego.
The marriage of Nuith (infinite possibility/the Unconscious) and Hadit (focused energy/the observing Ego) produces the "Child." Psychologically, this means that when the mind stops fighting itself and unites its vast potential with focused intention, a completely new, radiant personality is born. The figures rising in the letter Shin at the bottom are not dead bodies rising for judgment; they are the disparate parts of the psyche being "upgraded" to participate in this new, healthier, and more powerful state of being.
The Hebrew letter Shin, meaning "Tooth," is the instrument of biting, chewing, and breaking down — the oral stage of digestion that precedes all assimilation. In Jungian terms, Shin represents the psyche's capacity to break down the raw material of experience into forms that can be metabolized and integrated. The three prongs of the letter Shin correspond to the three Mother letters (Aleph/Air, Mem/Water, Shin/Fire) and thus to the three primary elements of psychic functioning. When all three are activated simultaneously — when thought, feeling, and will converge in a single transformative act — the result is the Aeon: not a gradual evolution but a sudden, total reorganization of consciousness. The Tooth is also the oldest weapon — the first instrument of aggression. The Aeon requires the Ego to bite through its own outdated assumptions with predatory decisiveness.
Fire as the elemental attribution (and Pluto as the associated planet) gives the Aeon its quality of total, irreversible transformation. In Jungian terms, Fire is the element of transmutation — not the slow erosion of Water or the analytical dissection of Air, but the instantaneous conversion of one substance into another. Pluto adds the dimension of depth-psychology at its most radical: the god of the underworld who demands that everything hidden be brought to the surface, every buried treasure and every buried corpse alike. The Aeon is the moment when Pluto's excavation is complete and the fire of Shin ignites all that has been unearthed. Nothing survives unchanged. The "New Aeon" that Crowley proclaims is, psychologically, the moment when an individual's entire framework of understanding — not just a belief or a habit, but the operating system through which all experience is processed — is replaced by something fundamentally new.
Path 31, connecting Hod (Splendour, the rational mind) to Malkuth (the Kingdom, physical reality), is the path through which the intellect's understanding finally reaches the ground of material existence. In Jungian terms, this is the moment when insight becomes reality — when the new paradigm is not merely understood but lived. The Aeon stands on this path because paradigm shifts are not purely intellectual events; they must descend all the way into the body, into daily life, into the way one walks and eats and speaks. The figures rising in the shape of Shin are the old mental structures being reorganized as they pass through this fire — not destroyed but transformed into forms capable of functioning in the new reality.
