The Universe is the final card of the Major Arcana, representing the completion of the Great Work. The card is a complex, dancing celebration of manifestation, shedding the dark, heavy colors traditionally associated with Saturn and Earth.
- The Dancing Maiden (The Virgin Universe): In the center is a maiden, the final letter of Tetragrammaton (the Daughter). She is represented as a dancing figure. In her hands, she manipulates the radiant spiral force (the active and passive, each possessing its dual polarity).
- Her Dancing Partner: Her invisible dancing partner is Heru-Ra-Ha (The Sun) of Atu XIX. She is the physical manifestation that the Sun fertilizes.
- The Eye of Shiva: The entire scene is encompassed by the Eye of Shiva, indicating that the Universe is both constantly created and annihilated in the blink of this cosmic eye.
- The Zodiacal Ellipse: About her is an ellipse composed of seventy-two circles, representing the quinaries (five-degree segments) of the Zodiac, the Shemhamphorasch.
- The Four Kerubim: In the four corners of the card are the four Kerubim (the Bull, the Lion, the Eagle, and the Man), representing the established Universe in all four directions.
- The Skeleton Plan of Matter: In the center of the lower part of the card is represented the skeleton plan of the building of the house of Matter. It shows the ninety-two known chemical elements, arranged according to their rank in the hierarchy (a design based on J.W.N. Sullivan's The Bases of Modern Science).
- The Radiant Colors: The general color of the traditional card is subfusc (dark and gloomy), representing the confusion and darkness of the material world. However, the New Aeon has brought the fullness of Light. Earth is no longer black; it is pure, bright green. The indigo of Saturn is derived from the blue velvet of the midnight sky.

Attributed to the letter Tau (The Cross of extension) and the planet Saturn (the outermost and slowest of the ancient planets), this card represents the material world (Assiah) and the element of Earth.
It is the complement of The Fool (0). The Fool is the negative issuing into manifestation; the Universe is that manifestation, its purpose accomplished, ready to return. Together, they spell the word Ath (Essence). The card is a glyph of the completion of the Great Work in its highest sense. The maiden has reached the end of the descent down the Tree of Life (Malkuth). The heavy, cold, and dry qualities of Saturn and Earth have been completely transfigured. It illustrates the doctrine that the heaviest elements (like radium), unable to support the strain of their internal structure, eventually radiate particles of the highest activity, proving that the end of the descent into matter immediately sparks the ascent back to Spirit.

The Universe represents the archetype of Wholeness, the Self, and the absolute completion of the Individuation Process.
The dancing maiden is the Ego that has fully integrated all parts of the psyche. She is no longer fighting against the heavy, restrictive forces of reality (Saturn/Earth); instead, she is dancing with them. The seventy-two stars and the periodic table of elements at the bottom represent the psychological mastery of the physical world. The individual has taken all the raw, chaotic materials of their life and ordered them into a perfect, functioning, and beautiful system.
Psychologically, encountering The Universe means that the Great Work of self-knowledge is complete for this cycle. The heavy, depressing "blackness" of neurosis (the traditional color of Saturn) has been transfigured into the "pure bright green" of living reality. The individual has achieved a state where they are completely grounded in the physical world (Malkuth), yet fully connected to the divine spark (Kether). It is the psychological state of absolute acceptance, joy, and mastery, right before the cycle begins again with a new Fool.
The Hebrew letter Tau, meaning "Cross" or "Mark," is the last letter of the Hebrew alphabet — the final seal, the mark of completion. In Jungian terms, the Cross is the supreme symbol of the union of opposites: vertical (spirit descending into matter) and horizontal (the extension of the individual into the world). The Cross is also the mark of individuation completed — the sign that the psyche has achieved its full extension in all four directions (the four Kerubim at the corners of the card). Tau as "Mark" suggests that the individuated personality bears a distinctive stamp — it has become irreplaceable, singular, a unique expression of the Self that could not have been produced by any other combination of elements.
Saturn, the outermost and slowest of the ancient planets, and the element of Earth, together represent the heaviest, most dense, and most inertial dimension of experience. In Jungian terms, Saturn is the senex in its fully redeemed form: not the tyrant who restricts and punishes, but the wise old structure that gives form to the formless and weight to the weightless. Saturn is Time itself — and the Universe card teaches that time is not the enemy of the spirit but its vessel. The transfiguration of Saturn's traditional blackness into the "pure bright green" of the card is the Jungian recognition that depression, limitation, and material reality, when fully embraced rather than resisted, become the very ground from which new life springs. Earth is not a tomb but a garden — but only for the psyche that has learned to dance with its own heaviness.
Path 32, connecting Yesod (the Foundation, the unconscious, the Moon) to Malkuth (the Kingdom, physical reality), is the very last path on the Tree of Life — the final step of the spirit's descent into matter. In Jungian terms, this is the moment when the individuated Self fully incarnates: when the insights, integrations, and transformations achieved in the inner world are brought all the way down into the body, into daily life, into the here-and-now of physical existence. The maiden dances on this path because the final stage of individuation is not a solemn achievement but a celebration — the discovery that the material world, far from being a prison, is the dance floor upon which the Self expresses its wholeness. Together with the Fool (Path 11, Kether to Chokmah), the Universe (Path 32, Yesod to Malkuth) forms the alpha and omega of the Great Work: the descent from Nothing into Everything, and the joyful realization that they are the same.
