英文原文 · English source

The Adjustment card replaces the traditional "Justice" card, depicting a young, slender woman poised perfectly on her tiptoes. Every element is a meticulous study in esoteric equilibrium:

  • The Crown of Maat: She is crowned with the ostrich plumes of Maat, the Egyptian goddess of Justice and Truth.
  • The Uraeus Serpent: Upon her forehead is the Uraeus serpent, Lord of Life and Death.
  • The Mask: She is masked, and her expression shows her secret, intimate satisfaction in her domination of every element of dis-equilibrium in the Universe.
  • The Magic Sword: Held in both hands, pointing directly downwards. This sword operates the secret course of judgment, transmuting and passing on current experience to future manifestation.
  • The Balances (Spheres): Hanging from the hilt of the sword are the balances (Alpha the First against Omega the Last) in which she weighs the Universe. These are the Judex and Testes of Final Judgment.
  • The Vesica Piscis: The entire central action takes place within a diamond shape formed by the figure itself, which is the concealed Vesica Piscis (a symbol of the yoni and the gateway between worlds) through which the sublimated experience passes.
  • The Throne of Spheres and Pyramids: She is poised before a throne composed of spheres and pyramids. There are four in number, signifying Law and Limitation, maintaining the exact equity that she herself manifests.
  • The Curtain of Rays: In the background corners are indicated balanced spheres of light and darkness. The constantly equilibrated rays from these spheres form a curtain, showing the interplay of all those forces which she sums up and adjudicates.
  • The Harlequin Suggestion: There is a suggestion of the Harlequin in her appearance. She is the ultimate illusion of manifestation; the dance, many-coloured and many-wiled, of Life itself.
  • The Sword Between the Thighs: From the cloak of vivid wantonness of her dancing wings issue her hands, holding the Phallic sword of the magician exactly between her thighs, representing the sexual application of the formula "Love is the law, love under will."

秘传含义

对应天秤座与 Lamed,连接严厉和美。透特将其称为调整,而非静态的正义。

英文原文 · English source

Crowley explicitly rejected the traditional name "Justice" because it implies a purely human, relative, and moralistic idea. "Nature is not just, according to any theological or ethical idea; but Nature is exact." Adjustment represents the absolute, unyielding karmic mathematics of the Universe.

This card is the feminine complement to The Fool (Aleph). Together, Aleph and Lamed spell AL, the title of The Book of the Law. The card represents Libra (ruled by Venus, meaning "Love is the law"), but because Saturn is exalted in Libra, it also represents the strict element of Time. Action and reaction take place in time, and every phenomenon must eventually be compensated for and balanced. She is the assessor of every act, demanding exact and precise satisfaction. She represents Manifestation, which may always be cancelled out by the equilibration of opposites.

荣格视角

象征对行为后果的意识,以及承认自身在关系中的责任。平衡需要持续校正。

英文原文 · English source

Adjustment is the archetype of Karmic Law and the psychological drive toward Homeostasis. In the psyche, there is an absolute law of compensation: if the conscious Ego swings too far in one direction (e.g., extreme rationality), the Unconscious will immediately produce an equal and opposite reaction (e.g., an outburst of irrational emotion) to force the system back into balance.

The figure, dancing on her tiptoes while holding a massive downward-pointing sword, represents the incredible, dynamic tension required to maintain psychological equilibrium. It is not a passive peace; it is a highly active, constantly adjusted state of balance. The fact that she is masked indicates that this balancing function operates impersonally and objectively, without regard for the Ego's personal prejudices, desires, or ideas of "fairness." Encountering Adjustment psychologically means recognizing that you cannot escape the consequences of your own energetic output; every thought and action has a psychological weight that must eventually be balanced on the scales of the inner Self.

The Hebrew letter Lamed, meaning "Ox Goad," is the instrument that drives the ox (Aleph, the Fool) forward. In Jungian terms, the Ox Goad represents the corrective function of the unconscious: the sharp prick of consequence that prevents the psyche from wandering off course. Every inflation is answered by a deflation; every repression by an eruption. Lamed is the longest letter of the Hebrew alphabet in its written form — it towers above the others — suggesting that this law of adjustment stands above all other psychic functions. Together, Aleph (the Fool) and Lamed (Adjustment) spell AL, the title of the Book of the Law, revealing that the primal creative chaos and its exact equilibration are two faces of a single cosmic principle.

Libra, ruled by Venus with Saturn exalted, creates a uniquely paradoxical psychological profile. Venus provides the desire for harmony, beauty, and relationship — the instinct toward balance that makes Adjustment an act of love rather than mere mechanics. But exalted Saturn introduces the dimension of Time, limitation, and inescapable consequence. In Jungian terms, Saturn is the senex — the old, strict, implacable principle that demands payment for every debt. The combination means that the psyche's balancing act is both beautiful and ruthless: it seeks harmony (Venus) but achieves it through the slow, grinding exactitude of cause and effect (Saturn). There is no escape through charm, no exemption through intention — only the perfect mathematics of psychic energy.

Path 22, connecting Geburah (Severity, the destructive force) to Tiphareth (Beauty, the integrated Self), reveals Adjustment as the process by which the harsh, punitive energies of Geburah are refined and harmonized into the balanced centre of the personality. Geburah breaks down what is false; Adjustment ensures that the breakdown is proportional and exact. Psychologically, this path describes the experience of facing consequences — not as random punishment but as the precise feedback the Self provides to the Ego on its journey toward integration. The sword pointing downward is the truth that descends from above, cutting through every self-deception with mathematical precision.
