The Hermit

生命之树路径 20处女座水星

希伯来字母 · Yod (י) - Meaning: "Hand"

画面与符号

灯、隐士与种子意象表现内向的光和孕育中的生命。

英文原文 · English source

The Hermit represents the highest and most spiritual aspect of Mercury, heavily rooted in the symbolism of the Hebrew letter Yod. The card is rich with esoteric and alchemical imagery:

  • The Hand: As Yod means "Hand," the hand is the tool or instrument par excellence and is positioned in the center of the picture. Yod is the foundation of all other Hebrew letters and the first letter of the Tetragrammaton, symbolizing the Father (Wisdom).
  • The Shape of the Hermit: The figure of the Hermit himself is drawn to visually recall the shape of the letter Yod.
  • The Cloak of Binah: The color of his cloak is the dark color of Binah (The Great Mother), in whom he gestates.
  • The Lamp of the Sun: In his hand, he holds a Lamp whose center is the Sun, portrayed in the likeness of the Sigil of the great King of Fire (Yod is the secret Fire).
  • The Orphic Egg: He appears to be contemplating or adoring the Orphic egg, which is greenish in color because it is conterminous with the Universe.
  • The Serpent Wand / Iridescent Snake: Surrounding the egg is a snake, many-colored to signify the iridescence of Mercury. The snake is also his Serpent Wand, shown actually growing out of the Abyss. It represents the fluidic essence of Light (the life of the Universe) and the spermatozoon developed as a poison, manifesting the foetus.
  • The Field of Wheat: The background of the card is a field of wheat, reflecting the attribution of the card to the earthy sign of Virgo, which is especially referred to as Corn.
  • Cerberus: Following him is Cerberus, the three-headed Hound of Hell, whom he has successfully tamed.

秘传含义

对应处女座与 Yod,连接仁慈和美,指向提炼与独立观察。

英文原文 · English source

The Hermit is the supreme representation of Fertility in its most exalted, secret, and spiritual sense. The letter Yod represents the active, creative impulse (the spermatozoon), which is why the card is called The Hermit (a solitary, hidden seed of life).

He is assigned to Virgo, the lowest, most receptive, and most feminine form of earth, representing the crust over Hades. Yet, Mercury is both the ruler and exalted in Virgo. This signifies the profound Qabalistic doctrine that the climax of the Descent into Matter is the exact signal for the reintegration by Spirit. The card recalls the Legend of Persephone: concealed within the darkest matter is the penetrating light of Mercury. One of his titles is Psychopompos, the guide of the soul through the lower regions (hence the taming of Cerberus).

In this Trump is shown the entire mystery of Life in its most secret workings: Yod = Phallus = Spermatozoon = Hand = Logos = Virgin. It declares a perfect Identity (not merely an equivalence) of the Extremes: the Manifestation and the Method.

荣格视角

象征从集体期待中退开,寻找内在方向。独处可支持成长,但不应固化成隔绝。

英文原文 · English source

The Hermit is the archetype of the Wise Old Man, the Psychopomp (guide of souls), and the process of Introversion. As the astrological sign of Virgo implies, the psychic energy is no longer expanding outward (like Leo); it has turned inward to meticulously analyze, refine, and purify the self.

The Hermit retreating into the dark cloak of Binah represents the Ego withdrawing from external society to undertake the deeply solitary journey of Individuation. The Lamp he carries contains the Sun (conscious awareness), which he uses to illuminate the dark, unconscious depths of the psyche (Hades/Virgo).

The taming of Cerberus represents the successful integration of the most primitive, terrifying instincts of the Shadow. The snake wrapping the egg represents the Transcendent Function (Mercury)—the psychological mechanism that unites the conscious intellect with the primal depths, resulting in the birth of the new, whole Self (the Orphic Egg). Encountering the Hermit psychologically means you must stop seeking answers from the outside world. You must turn the light of your awareness inward, descending into your own psychological "underworld" to find the hidden seed of truth.

The Hebrew letter Yod, meaning "Hand," is the smallest letter of the Hebrew alphabet yet the one from which all others are derived — the seminal spark, the seed-point of creation. In Jungian terms, Yod represents the hand of consciousness reaching into the darkness to grasp what cannot be seen. The hand is the instrument of making — it shapes, it grasps, it creates. But the Hermit's hand holds a lamp, not a tool of construction: he is not yet building anything. He is in the phase of illumination that must precede all genuine creation. The identity Crowley draws — Yod = Phallus = Spermatozoon = Hand = Logos = Virgin — maps in Jungian terms to the recognition that the creative principle (masculine, solar, active) and the receptive principle (feminine, earthy, gestating) are ultimately identical at the deepest level of the psyche. The Hermit has reached the point where these opposites converge.

Virgo, ruled by Mercury (who is also exalted here), is the sign of the harvest, the maiden, and meticulous inner work. In Jungian terms, Virgo represents the analytical function turned upon the self — not the outward-facing analysis of Gemini, but the painstaking, humble, grain-by-grain sorting of psychic contents that characterizes the deepest phase of individuation. The field of wheat in the background is the harvest of this work: meaning extracted from the raw material of experience. Mercury's double rulership (both ruler and exalted) means that the Hermit's intelligence operates at its most refined — not the quick wit of the Magus but the deep, patient, penetrating understanding that comes only from sustained introspection. The descent into Virgo's "crust over Hades" corresponds to Jung's nekyia — the night-sea journey into the underworld of the unconscious.

Path 20, connecting Chesed (Mercy, the benevolent ordering principle) to Tiphareth (Beauty, the integrated Self), reveals the Hermit as the bridge between established structure and living wholeness. Chesed is the organized system — religion, philosophy, law — while Tiphareth is the direct experience of the Self. The Hermit walks this path alone, carrying only his lamp, because the transition from received wisdom to lived truth cannot be made collectively. It is the most solitary passage in the individuation process: the moment when all external teachers, doctrines, and supports must be left behind, and the individual must find the light within their own hand.
