The Eight (Hod) in the suit of Water governs this card. It shows the influence of Mercury, but this is overpowered by the reference of the card to Saturn in Pisces.
- The Stagnant Pools: Water appears no longer as the Sea but as pools — isolated, stagnant, incapable of flow. The emotional life has fragmented into disconnected puddles of feeling that lead nowhere.
- The Drooping Lotuses: The Lotuses droop for lack of sun and rain, and the soil is poison to them. Only two of the stems show blossoms at all. The sources of emotional nourishment have dried up.
- The Shallow, Old, Broken Cups: The cups are shallow, old, and broken — arranged in three rows, the upper row quite empty. Water trickles from the two flowers into the two central cups, and they drip into the two lowest without filling them. The emotional life is leaking, depleted, unable to contain or sustain.
- The Vast Badlands: The background shows pools or lagoons in very extensive country, incapable of cultivation. Only disease and miasmatic poison can flourish in those vast Bad Lands. The water is dark and muddy, and on the horizon is a pallid yellowish light weighed down by leaden clouds of indigo.

The Eight of Cups is called Indolence. Pisces is calm but stagnant water, and Saturn deadens it completely. There is no florescence in this card as there was in the last. Compare with the Seven: the one is the Garden of Kundry, the other the Palace of Klingsor — the Seven was the error of excess; the Eight is the equal and opposite error of withdrawal.
In the psychopathology of the Path, this card is the "German Measles of Christian Mysticism" — the spiritual torpor that results from mistaking passivity for peace, withdrawal for transcendence, and emotional numbness for enlightenment.
Saturn deadens the Piscean waters completely. The emotional life has not been destroyed by violence (as in the Five) or corrupted by excess (as in the Seven), but simply abandoned — allowed to stagnate through neglect and the absence of will.

The Eight of Cups represents the archetype of Emotional Withdrawal — the psychological state in which the individual has retreated from feeling entirely, not because they have transcended emotion but because they have exhausted themselves through its misuse (the Seven) or been defeated by its pain (the Five). The result is a grey, flat, joyless landscape — not the active suffering of depression but the passive numbness of depletion.
In Jungian terms, this is the state of psychic deflation that follows a period of inflation (the Seven's debauch). The Ego, having chased emotional intensity to the point of exhaustion, now swings to the opposite extreme: feeling nothing at all. The "vast Bad Lands" in the background represent the inner landscape of the individual who has burned through their emotional reserves and finds only a barren wasteland where vitality once grew. The broken, leaking cups show a psychic container that has been damaged by misuse — the capacity to hold feeling has been compromised.
Crowley's comparison to Parsifal's mythology is psychologically precise: the Seven is Kundry's Garden (the seduction of excessive pleasure) and the Eight is Klingsor's Palace (the sterile, manipulative withdrawal from life). In Jungian terms, these are the two faces of the negative Anima: the siren who drowns the Ego in sensation, and the ice queen who freezes it into numbness. The "German Measles of Christian Mysticism" is the spiritual form of this error: mistaking emotional deadness for spiritual detachment, confusing the inability to feel with the transcendence of feeling.
As the Hod (Splendour) card of the Cups suit, the Eight represents Water in the sphere of Mercury — the intellect attempting to process the emotional devastation of the lower cards. In Jungian terms, Hod in Water is the rationalizing function applied to emotional pain: the mind constructing elaborate justifications for why it is better not to feel. Mercury's usual brilliance is "overpowered" by Saturn's deadening influence — the intellect is being used not to illuminate but to suppress, not to understand but to wall off.
Saturn in Pisces is one of the most psychologically difficult configurations. Pisces is the sign of oceanic sensitivity, boundless empathy, and dissolution of boundaries. Saturn is the principle of limitation, restriction, and cold reality. Together they produce the experience of emotional paralysis: the individual can sense the vast ocean of feeling that lies beneath the surface but is unable or unwilling to access it. Saturn has built a dam across the Piscean river, and the emotional life has stagnated behind it. The pallid, leaden sky shows that even the light of consciousness has been dimmed by this Saturnian constriction.
The Eight of Cups in psychological work signals a state of emotional depletion, withdrawal, or numbness — the urgent need to break through the Saturnian barrier and allow feeling to flow again, even if the first feelings that return are painful ones.
