The remaining three cards of the suit belong to Sagittarius, which represents the subtilizing of the Fiery energy. Mercury rules the card, thus bringing down from Chokmah the message of the original Will.
- The Electrical Rays: The Light-wands have turned into electrical rays, sustaining or even constituting Matter by their vibrating energy. There are no flames — they have all been taken up into the wands to turn them into rays. The fire has become light, and light has become information.
- The Rainbow: Above this restored universe shines the rainbow — the division of pure light which deals with maxima into the seven colours of the spectrum, which exhibit interplay and correlation.
- The Intelligible Geometric Form: The electric energy has created intelligible geometrical form — chaos has been transmuted into order through the power of high-velocity communication.

The Eight of Wands is called Swiftness. The card refers to Hod (Splendour) in the suit of Fire, whence it refers to the phenomena of speech, light, and electricity. Mercury in Sagittarius shows the fiery energy refined into its most intellectual and communicative form.
This card represents energy of high velocity, such as furnishes the master-key to modern mathematical physics. It is Fire that has been sublimated beyond flame into pure radiant force — the speed of thought, the flash of insight, the instantaneous transmission of meaning.

The Eight of Wands represents the archetype of Mercurial Intelligence — psychic energy that has been refined from raw passion into pure speed of thought and communication. In Jungian terms, this is the logos function operating at its peak: the capacity to perceive patterns, transmit meaning, and make connections at a velocity that bypasses the slower processes of feeling and sensation.
The transformation from flames into electrical rays corresponds to what Jung described as the sublimation of instinct into culture — the same energy that in the Five erupted as destructive strife has here been refined into the instantaneous clarity of insight. There are no flames because there is no waste, no friction, no resistance — the energy moves at the speed of light because it has been completely freed from material obstruction.
As the Hod (Splendour) card of the Wands suit, the Eight represents Fire operating through the sphere of Mercury — the intellect, language, and the analytical mind. In Jungian terms, Hod is the psyche's capacity for articulation: the function that takes raw experience and translates it into communicable form. When Fire (creative will) enters Hod, the result is not cold analysis but illuminated analysis — thought that burns with the intensity of its source. The phenomena of "speech, light, electricity" that Crowley attributes to this card are all forms of transmission — energy that crosses distance instantaneously. Psychologically, this is the experience of sudden understanding, of ideas connecting across vast conceptual distances in a single flash, of communication that transmits not just information but energy.
Mercury in Sagittarius combines the messenger god's speed and precision with the Archer's far-seeing, philosophical vision. In Jungian terms, Mercury provides the mechanism of transmission — the capacity to formulate and articulate — while Sagittarius provides the aim: the intuitive sense of where the arrow of thought should fly. Mercury alone can be scattered and trivial (mere cleverness); Sagittarius alone can be vague and unfocused (mere aspiration). Together they produce the experience of thought that is simultaneously swift and purposeful — the insight that arrives complete, the communication that hits its target. The rainbow above the scene shows that this intellectual clarity does not reduce reality to a single colour but reveals its full spectrum — understanding that honours complexity rather than simplifying it.
The Eight of Wands in psychological work signals a moment of exceptional mental clarity and speed — ideas flowing freely, communications landing precisely, insights arriving faster than they can be recorded. The task is to ride this energy rather than trying to slow it down.
