英文原文 · English source

This card is ruled by Geburah in the suit of Water. Geburah being fiery, there is a natural antipathy. Hence arises the idea of disturbance just when least expected, in a time of ease.

  • The Torn Lotuses: The Lotuses have their petals torn by fiery winds — the delicate emotional structures that bloomed in the earlier cards are being shredded by forces they were not built to withstand.
  • The Arid, Stagnant Sea: The sea is arid and stagnant, a dead sea like a chott in North Africa. The living water of feeling has dried up; the emotional landscape has become barren.
  • The Empty Cups in an Inverted Pentagram: No water flows into the cups. Moreover, these cups are arranged in the form of an inverted pentagram, symbolizing the triumph of matter over spirit — desire has conquered meaning.

英文原文 · English source

The Five of Cups is called Disappointment. The attribution is to Mars in Scorpio, which is his own house. Mars is the manifestation on the lowest plane of Geburah, while Scorpio in its worst aspect suggests the putrefying power of Water. Yet the powerful male influences do not show actual decay, only the beginning of destruction; hence the anticipated pleasure is frustrated.

Mars in Scorpio is the attribution of the Geomantic figure Rubeus — of such evil omen that certain schools of Geomancy destroy the Map and postpone the question for two hours or more when Rubeus appears in the Ascendant.

The Five of Water, unlike the Five of Fire (which delights in superabundant energy), is naturally placid. Any disturbance of its ease can only be regarded as misfortune.

英文原文 · English source

The Five of Cups represents the archetype of Emotional Disillusionment — the painful moment when the psyche's expectations of lasting happiness collide with the reality of impermanence. Unlike the Five of Wands (Strife), which involves active, energetic conflict, the Five of Cups is a passive suffering: the disappointment of the individual who expected pleasure to continue and finds instead that the source has dried up.

In Jungian terms, this is the collapse of an Anima projection: the individual has invested their capacity for feeling in an external object (a person, a situation, a dream) and that object has failed to deliver the emotional sustenance it seemed to promise. The inverted pentagram — matter triumphing over spirit — shows the moment when the Ego realizes it has been worshipping an idol: confusing the vehicle of feeling (the specific person, the specific pleasure) with the source of feeling (the Anima herself, the inner capacity for love that belongs to no one but the individual).

As the Geburah (Severity) card of the Cups suit, the Five represents the destructive principle operating within the realm of emotion. In Jungian terms, Geburah in Water is the psyche's critical function applied to the emotional life — the ruthless inner honesty that strips away illusion and forces the individual to see their emotional attachments for what they really are. This is not the volcanic eruption of the Five of Wands but a quieter, more insidious destruction: the slow realization that the relationship is dead, that the pleasure has become hollow, that the dream will not come true. The fiery nature of Geburah in the watery suit creates an antipathy that Crowley identifies as "disturbance just when least expected" — the crisis that arrives not in a time of struggle but in a time of ease.

Mars in Scorpio is Mars in his own house — the god of war operating through the sign of death, transformation, and the hidden depths. In Jungian terms, this is the aggressive instinct directed not outward but inward — the capacity for ruthless emotional self-examination that Scorpio at its best represents. Mars in Scorpio does not destroy from outside; it penetrates — finding the weak point, the hidden rot, the unacknowledged truth that the Ego has been avoiding. The "putrefying power of Water" that Crowley identifies is the Scorpionic capacity to reveal what has been decaying beneath the surface of a seemingly healthy emotional life. The Geomantic figure Rubeus (so evil that the diviner destroys the map) represents the kind of truth that, once seen, cannot be unseen — the devastating clarity that ends all pretence.

The Five of Cups in psychological work signals a period of emotional disappointment and disillusionment — but beneath the pain is the gift of clarity: the opportunity to distinguish between genuine feeling and its projections, and to rebuild the emotional life on a more honest foundation.
