English source

The Number Five (Geburah) in the suit of Earth shows the disruption of the element, as in the other suits. This is emphasized by the rule of Mercury in Taurus — types of energy which are opposed.

  • The Five Disks as Inverted Pentagram: The symbol represents five disks in the form of the inverted Pentagram — instability in the very foundations of Matter. The effect is that of an earthquake.
  • The Tattvic Binding: The disks are representative of the five Tattvas — these hold together, on a very low plane, an organism which would otherwise disrupt completely.
  • The Angry Background: The background is an angry, ugly red with yellow markings. The general effect is one of intense strain, yet the symbol implies long-continued inaction.

秘传含义

五号牌使稳定受到冲突和考验。占星归属为 ☿ 水星 in ♉ 金牛座。主题“忧虑”描述的是这一力量的状态,不应被简化为固定的好坏结论。

英文原文 · English source

The Five of Disks is called Worry. It needs a very powerful Mercury to upset Taurus, so the natural meaning is intelligence applied to labour — but applied destructively, through anxiety rather than productive effort. The economic system has broken down; there is no more balance between the social orders.

Disks, being as they are stolid and obstinate as compared with the other weapons, for their revolution serves to stabilize them — there is no action, at least not in its own ambit, that can affect the issue. The worry is the grinding, inescapable anxiety of material insecurity.

英文原文 · English source

The Five of Disks represents the archetype of Material Anxiety — the grinding, persistent worry that arises when the foundations of physical security are threatened. Unlike the dramatic destruction of the Five of Wands (Strife) or the acute disappointment of the Five of Cups, the Five of Disks is a chronic condition: the slow, relentless erosion of confidence in one's material circumstances that produces not action but paralysis.

In Jungian terms, this is the sensation function overwhelmed by the destructive principle of Geburah: the body's alarm system activated by the perception of material threat, producing the fight-or-flight response — but with nowhere to fight and nowhere to flee. The "long-continued inaction" that Crowley identifies is the hallmark of worry as a psychological state: the mind spins endlessly around the problem but cannot find a solution, because the problem is not intellectual but material, and the material world resists purely mental intervention.

As the Geburah (Severity) card of the Disks suit, the Five represents the destructive principle operating within the most stable and resistant element. In Jungian terms, Geburah in Earth is the earthquake: the sudden disruption of what seemed most solid and reliable. The inverted pentagram of disks shows that the very foundations of matter have been destabilized — this is not a surface disturbance but a structural crisis. The five Tattvas holding together "an organism which would otherwise disrupt completely" suggest that the situation is being held together by the most primitive, most fundamental forces — survival instinct, biological necessity — rather than by any conscious strategy.

Mercury in Taurus creates a uniquely frustrating combination. Mercury is quick, nervous, and intellectual; Taurus is slow, stubborn, and physical. In Jungian terms, this produces the experience of a mind that can see the problem clearly but cannot solve it — because the problem is rooted in material conditions that resist intellectual manipulation. The worry arises precisely from this gap between understanding and capacity: the individual knows what is wrong but cannot make it right, because the material world has its own inertia that does not yield to thought alone.

The Five of Disks in psychological work signals a period of material anxiety and insecurity — the need to distinguish between productive concern (which leads to practical action) and corrosive worry (which only compounds the paralysis).
