画面与符号

宝剑五 · 失败以宝剑的视觉符号表现“失败”的主题。宝剑对应风,关注思想、语言和判断。牌面的具体几何、颜色与符号可在下方英文原文中逐项核对。

英文原文 · English source

Geburah as always produces disruption; but as Venus here rules Aquarius, weakness rather than excess of strength seems the cause of disaster. The intellect has been enfeebled by sentiment.

  • The Inverted Pentagram of Hilts: The hilts of the swords form the inverted pentagram — always a symbol of somewhat sinister tendency. None of the hilts resembles any of the others, and their blades are crooked or broken.
  • The Drooping, Ineffective Weapons: The swords give the impression of drooping; only the lowest of the swords points upward, and this is the least effective of the weapons. The intellectual arsenal has been degraded and depleted.
  • The Disintegrated Rose: The rose of the previous cards has been altogether disintegrated — the harmony is gone, the compromise is shattered, and nothing remains but wreckage.

秘传含义

五号牌使稳定受到冲突和考验。占星归属为 ♀ 金星 in ♒ 水瓶座。主题“失败”描述的是这一力量的状态,不应被简化为固定的好坏结论。

英文原文 · English source

The Five of Swords is called Defeat. The defeat is due to pacifism. Treachery also may be implied. There has been insufficient power to maintain the armed peace of the Four. The quarrel has actually broken out.

This must mean defeat for the original idea of the Sword — a manifestation of the result of the love between the Wand and the Cup. It is because the birth had to express itself in the duality of the Sword and the Disk that the nature of each appears so imperfect.

Venus in Aquarius: the intellect has been enfeebled by sentiment. Weakness rather than excess of strength seems the cause of disaster.

英文原文 · English source

The Five of Swords represents the archetype of Intellectual Defeat — the psychological collapse that occurs when the mind's defences (the Truce of the Four) prove inadequate against the forces they were meant to contain. Unlike the Five of Wands (active, energetic strife) or the Five of Cups (passive emotional disappointment), the Five of Swords is a strategic defeat: the failure of a plan, the exposure of a weakness in one's thinking, the humiliation of being proven wrong.

In Jungian terms, this is the collapse of the persona intellectualis — the carefully constructed intellectual identity that the individual has used to navigate the world. The inverted pentagram shows spirit subordinated to matter: the mind's highest capacities have been turned against themselves, producing not wisdom but confusion, not clarity but defeat. The disintegrated rose confirms that whatever consensus or compromise held the intellectual structure together has been destroyed.

As the Geburah (Severity) card of the Swords suit, the Five represents the destructive principle operating within the domain of thought. In Jungian terms, Geburah in Air is the critical function turned against the mind's own constructions — the ruthless self-examination that discovers the flaws in one's own arguments, the errors in one's own logic, the blind spots in one's own worldview. The "defeat due to pacifism" that Crowley identifies is psychologically precise: the mind that has chosen comfort (the Four's truce) over truth is eventually defeated not by a stronger enemy but by its own weakness.

Venus in Aquarius creates a particularly insidious form of intellectual failure. Venus is the principle of harmony, beauty, and the desire to be liked; Aquarius is the sign of intellectual independence and original thought. In Jungian terms, this combination produces the individual whose thinking has been compromised by the desire for social approval — the thinker who softens their conclusions, hedges their arguments, and avoids uncomfortable truths in order to maintain relationships. The "treachery" Crowley mentions is the betrayal of the intellect by sentiment: the mind that knows the truth but refuses to speak it because the truth is unpopular. The crooked, broken swords are the degraded weapons of a thinker who has sacrificed sharpness for agreeableness.

The Five of Swords in psychological work signals a moment of intellectual humiliation or the exposure of self-deception — painful but potentially liberating, if the individual can use the defeat as the starting point for more honest thinking.
