This card is referred to Geburah in the suit of Fire. Geburah itself being fiery, it is a purely active force. There is no limit to the scope of this volcanic energy.

  • The Wand of the Chief Adept: The central symbol represents the wand of the Chief Adept, showing that the authority of disruption is derived from the superiors — without this sanction, the card would be thoroughly disastrous.
  • The Two Phoenix Wands: There are also two wands of the Second (or Major) Adept. They have the head of the Phoenix, which gives the idea of destruction — or rather purgation — through fire, and the resurrection of the energy from its ashes.
  • The Daughter Wands: A pair of wands of the Third (or Minor) Adept, which are daughters of the wands in the Three of Wands. In this card there is the mitigating influence of the Mother — one of the most difficult doctrines regarding Geburah is that while it represents all this tameless, irrational energy and disturbance, yet it derives from the benign and gentle influence of the feminine.

The Five of Wands is called Strife. It is ruled by Saturn and Leo. Leo shows the element of Fire at its strongest and most balanced; Saturn tends to weigh it down and to embitter it. This creates an intense, volcanic conflict — the stable order of the Four has been violently disrupted.

The introduction of the number Five shows the idea of motion coming to the aid of that of matter. This is quite a revolutionary conception; the result is a complete upset of the statically stabilized system. This must not be regarded as something evil — the natural feeling about it is really a little more than the reluctance of people to get up from lunch and go back to the job.

The Egyptians understood the doctrine of divine feminine cruelty perfectly: their Lion-goddess Pasht was hailed as saeva et ferox.

The Five of Wands represents the archetype of Necessary Destruction — the eruption of unconscious forces that shatters the stable but stagnant structure of the Four. In Jungian terms, this is the moment of creative illness — when the psyche, having outgrown its current container, begins to tear it apart from within.

The doctrine that Geburah's destructive energy "derives from the benign and gentle influence of the feminine" maps to a crucial Jungian insight: the most devastating psychological crises often originate in the unconscious (the feminine, the Mother) as acts of care. The psyche destroys what we have built not out of malice but because we have stopped growing, and growth is the psyche's deepest imperative.

As the Geburah (Severity) card of the Wands suit, the Five represents Fire encountering its own destructive principle — and since Geburah is itself fiery, this is a doubling of intensity that produces "purely active force" with "no limit to its scope." In Jungian terms, Geburah is the archetype of the critical function — the internal judge, the ruthless editor, the force within the psyche that looks at everything the Ego has built and asks: "Is this still true? Is this still alive? Or has it become a comfortable lie?" When the answer is the latter, Geburah strikes without mercy. The hierarchy of wands in the card (Chief Adept, Major Adept, Minor Adept) shows that this destruction is ordered — it proceeds from the highest authority downward, not as random chaos but as disciplined demolition.

Saturn in Leo creates a particularly agonizing psychological tension. Leo is the sign of the Self's radiant, creative expression — the solar energy that desires to shine, to create, to be fully alive. Saturn is the cold, heavy, restricting principle that frustrates and blocks this expression. In Jungian terms, this combination produces the experience of creative depression: the individual knows they are capable of great things (Leo) but feels crushed, delayed, and embittered by circumstances, responsibilities, or inner blocks (Saturn). The strife is not between the individual and the world, but between the individual's creative potential and the forces — internal and external — that prevent its realization. The Phoenix wands promise that this strife is not terminal: the fire that destroys is also the fire that resurrects. But the resurrection cannot happen until the old forms have been fully consumed.

The Five of Wands in psychological work signals conflict, frustration, and the breakdown of established patterns — but frames this as a necessary prelude to renewal.
