画面与符号

圣杯四 · 奢华以圣杯的视觉符号表现“奢华”的主题。圣杯对应水,关注感受、接纳和关系。牌面的具体几何、颜色与符号可在下方英文原文中逐项核对。

英文原文 · English source

This card refers to Chesed in the sphere of Water. Here, below the Abyss, the energy of this element — although ordered, balanced, and (for the moment) stabilized — has lost the original purity of the conception.

  • The Ruffled Sea: The sea is still shown, but its surface is ruffled — the perfect calm of the earlier cards has been disturbed. The first signs of restlessness have appeared in what was once placid contentment.
  • The Four Unstable Cups: The four Cups which stand upon the sea are no longer so stable. The foundation that seemed so secure is beginning to shift.
  • The Multiple-Stemmed Lotus: The Lotus from which the water springs has a multiple stem, as if to show that the influence of the Dyad has gathered strength. The single source has become complicated; what was one desire has proliferated into many.

The Four of Cups is called Luxury. The card refers to the Moon in Cancer, which is her own house; but Cancer itself is so placed that this implies a certain weakness, an abandonment to desire. This tends to introduce the seeds of decay into the fruit of pleasure.

Four is an awkward number: alone among the natural numbers, it is impossible to construct a Magic Square of four cells. Even in the Naples Arrangement, Four is a dead stop, a blind alley. An idea of a totally different Order is necessary to carry on the series. Four is the number of the Curse of Limitation, of Restriction — it is the blind and barren Cross of equal arms, Tetragrammaton in his fatal aspect of finality.

The weakness in the element of Water threatens its purity; it is not quite strong enough to control itself properly, so the Lord of Pleasure is a little unstable. Purity has somehow been lost in the process of satisfaction.

英文原文 · English source

The Four of Cups represents the archetype of Satiated Desire — the psychological state in which pleasure has been achieved but has already begun to breed its own dissatisfaction. It is the moment after fulfilment when the Ego discovers that getting what it wanted does not eliminate wanting — it merely shifts the object of desire.

In Jungian terms, this is the experience of hedonic adaptation: the psyche's relentless capacity to normalize pleasure and begin searching for the next stimulus. The ruffled sea shows that the inner peace of the earlier cards has been disturbed not by external crisis but by the restlessness that arises within satisfaction itself. Luxury is not abundance (the Three) but abundance that has become routine — and in becoming routine, has lost its power to satisfy.

As the Chesed (Mercy) card of the Cups suit, the Four represents the first manifestation of Water below the Abyss — feeling that has solidified into a stable structure. In Jungian terms, Chesed is the benevolent establishment — the comfortable emotional life that the personality has constructed: the relationship, the home, the social circle, the pleasures. But Four is the "number of the Curse of Limitation," and in the Cups suit this curse manifests as the prison of comfort. The emotional life has become so stable that it is stagnant; the desire that once drove the individual toward growth has been pacified by pleasure. The "blind and barren Cross of equal arms" suggests a psychological dead end — the point where the Ego can no longer progress by doing more of what has been working.

Moon in Cancer is the Moon in her own home — the most powerfully receptive and emotionally sensitive configuration. In Jungian terms, this is the unconscious operating at maximum intensity within the realm of feeling: every emotion is amplified, every pleasure is deepened, every desire is intensified. But the Moon in her own sign is also the Moon most prone to regression — the pull back toward the womb, the infantile desire for safety and satiation that resists the demands of growth. The "abandonment to desire" that Crowley identifies is not mere hedonism but the deeper psychological pull toward the maternal embrace — the wish to return to a state where all needs are met without effort, where the Ego can float in the warm amniotic sea of Binah without having to struggle toward individuation.

The Four of Cups in psychological work signals a moment of emotional comfort that has become a trap — the urgent need for a new challenge, a new desire, a new disruption (the Five) to break the spell of luxury and restore the psyche's forward momentum.
