The Four (Chesed) shows the establishment of the Universe in three dimensions — below the Abyss. The generating idea is exhibited in its full material sense.
- The Fortress of Square Disks: The disks are very large and solid; the suggestion of the card is that of a fortress. They are square — revolution is very opposite to the card — and they contain the signs of the Four Elements. For all that, they revolve: defence is valid only when violently active.
- The Deep Azure Moat: The background is of deep azure flecked yellow, suggesting a moat — the protective barrier around established power.
- The Guarded Fields Beyond: Beyond the moat is a pattern of green and indigo to represent the guarded fields whose security is assured by the fortress.

The Four of Disks is called Power. It represents Law and Order maintained by constant authority and vigilance. The card is ruled by the Sun in Capricorn — the sign in which he is reborn (the winter solstice, when the Sun turns again Northward).
The Four as a fortress: this represents the power which dominates and stabilizes everything but manages its affairs more by negotiation, by pacific methods, than by any assertion of itself. It is Law, the Constitution, with no aggressive element.

The Four of Disks represents the archetype of Material Sovereignty — the establishment of a stable, defended, and self-sustaining material structure: the home, the estate, the business, the physical body at its peak of health and organization. It is the Earth equivalent of the Four of Wands (Completion) — power consolidated, defended, and functioning.
In Jungian terms, the Four of Disks is the sensation function at its most organized and commanding: the individual who has achieved material mastery — not merely survival but genuine power over their physical circumstances. The fortress represents the Ego's relationship with the material world: solid, square, well-defended, with moat and guarded fields extending outward. This is the psychological experience of material security at its most complete.
As the Chesed (Mercy) card of the Disks suit, the Four represents the first manifestation of Earth below the Abyss — material reality organized into a benevolent, functioning system. In Jungian terms, Chesed in Earth is the archetype of the good steward: the individual who manages material resources not through aggression but through wisdom, patience, and the kind of authority that derives from competence rather than force. The fortress manages its affairs "more by negotiation, by pacific methods" — it does not need to attack because its position is inherently unassailable.
Sun in Capricorn is the Sun at the winter solstice — the point of his lowest descent and therefore the point of his rebirth. In Jungian terms, this has profound significance: the material power depicted in this card is not a summer achievement but a winter one — power won through the darkest, coldest, most demanding conditions. Capricorn provides the ambition, structure, and unflinching realism; the Sun provides the central purpose and the promise of renewal. The square disks "revolve" despite their solidity, showing that even the most stable material structure is maintained not by inertia but by continuous, active effort — "defence is valid only when violently active."
The Four of Disks in psychological work signals a period of established material power and security — but reminds that power requires constant, active maintenance and that the fortress must serve life, not merely protect it.
