The Knight of Cups represents the fiery part of Water — the swift, passionate attack of rain and springs; more intimately, Water's power of solution. He is clothed in black armour furnished with bright wings, which, together with the leaping attitude of his white charger, indicate that he represents the most active aspect of Water.
- The Cup with the Crab: In his right hand he bears a cup from which issues a Crab — the cardinal sign of Water — representing aggressiveness. Water here is not passive but attacking, dissolving, penetrating.
- The Peacock: His totem is the peacock, for one of the stigmata of water in its most active form is brilliance. There is here also some reference to the phenomena of fluorescence — the shimmering, iridescent quality of water when agitated by fire.
- The Black Armour and Bright Wings: The contrast between the dark armour and the luminous wings captures the paradox of this figure: deep, hidden emotional currents (black) that suddenly manifest as dazzling, beautiful displays (wings).
- The White Horse Leaping: The white horse in mid-leap shows the purity of the emotional impulse at the moment of its expression — before it has been complicated by thought or calculation.

The Knight of Cups represents the fiery part of Water. He rules the Heavens from the 20th degree of Aquarius to the 20th degree of Pisces. As the Yod of the Tetragrammaton in the suit of Water, he is the initial, explosive aspect of the emotional element — the sudden surge of feeling that initiates all emotional experience.
The characteristics of the person signified by this card are nevertheless mostly passive, in accordance with the Zodiacal attribution. He is graceful, dilettante, with the qualities of Venus or a weak Jupiter. He is amiable in a passive way. He is quick to respond to attraction and easily becomes enthusiastic under such stimulus, but he is not very enduring. He is exceedingly sensitive to external influences, but with no material depth in his character.
When ill-dignified, he is sensual, idle, and untruthful. Yet with all this he possesses an innocence and purity which are the essence of his nature. But he is on the whole so superficial that it is hard to reach this depth. His name is writ in water.
In the Yi King, the fiery part of Water is represented by the 54th hexagram, Kwei Mei. Swiftness and violence ill suit a character naturally placid; it is rare indeed to meet with a person who has succeeded in harmonizing these conflicting elements.

The Knight of Cups embodies the archetype of the Romantic — the psychic energy of sudden, passionate emotional engagement before it has been tested by reality or tempered by reflection. He is the feeling function in its most impulsive and idealizing form: the rush of infatuation, the overwhelming aesthetic response, the tears that come unbidden at beauty or sorrow.
Psychologically, this figure represents those moments when the Ego is seized by an emotional wave so powerful that all critical faculties are suspended. The individual falls in love, is moved to tears, is seized by compassion or longing — not gradually but instantaneously, with the full force of the fiery part of Water. The peacock totem captures this brilliantly: the emotional display is dazzling, iridescent, genuinely beautiful — but it is also a display, and the creature behind it may be far less magnificent than its plumage suggests.
The shadow side is devastating: "his name is writ in water." Because the Knight's emotional engagement is so intense and so sudden, it is equally transient. He falls in love instantly and out of love just as fast. He is moved to tears by suffering and forgets it by morning. The warning about schizophrenia and "melancholy madness" points to the Jungian danger of a feeling function that has no stable Ego to contain it — when Fire and Water war within the psyche without resolution, the result can be a personality that fragments under its own contradictions.
As the Fiery part of Water and the letter Yod of the Tetragrammaton in the Cups suit, the Knight represents the initial spark of emotion — the moment feeling first ignites. In Jungian terms, Yod within Water is the animus operating within the realm of eros: the aggressive, penetrating, masculine principle attempting to act through the fluid, receptive, feminine element. This creates the fundamental tension of the card: fire wants to act, water wants to receive; fire wants to conquer, water wants to dissolve. The individual who embodies this card is perpetually caught between the urge to do something about their feelings and the nature of feelings themselves, which resist being acted upon.
His zodiacal range — 20° Aquarius to 20° Pisces — straddles the most intellectual (Aquarius) and most oceanic (Pisces) of the Water-adjacent signs. Aquarius contributes detachment, idealism, and a tendency to intellectualize emotion; Pisces contributes boundless sensitivity, empathy, and a tendency to lose oneself in the feelings of others. Together they produce a figure who is simultaneously brilliant and insubstantial — capable of extraordinary emotional insight but incapable of sustaining the relationships that insight makes possible.
The Knight of Cups in psychological work signals the arrival of powerful emotional energy — but warns that this energy must be grounded in commitment and sustained attention if it is to become anything more than a beautiful, transient wave.
