The Knight of Disks represents the fiery part of Earth, and refers in particular to the phenomena of mountains, earthquakes, and gravitation; but it also represents the activity of Earth regarded as the producer of Life.
- The Short, Sturdy Warrior: He is short and sturdy in type, clothed in great solidity of plate armour. His physical presence conveys density, weight, and immovable determination.
- The Stag-Crested Helmet Thrown Back: His helmet, crested with the head of a stag, is thrown back — for at the moment his function is entirely confined to the production of food. He has set aside the warrior's vigilance in favour of the farmer's labour.
- The Flail and the Solid Disk: He is armed with a flail, and the disk which he bears is very solid — it represents nutrition. He is the cultivator, not the conqueror.
- The Shire Horse on All Fours: His steed is a shire horse, solidly planted on all four feet — as was not the case with the other Knights. He rides through fertile land; even the distant hills are cultivated fields.

The Knight of Disks represents the fiery part of Earth. He rules from the 20th degree of Leo to the 20th degree of Virgo and is thus concerned greatly with agriculture. As the Yod of the Tetragrammaton in the suit of Disks, he is the initial, activating spark within the most material element.
Those whom he symbolizes tend to be dull, heavy, and preoccupied with material things. They are laborious and patient, but would have little intellectual grasp even of matters which concern them most closely. Their success is due to instinct, to imitation of Nature. They lack initiative; their fire is the smouldering fire of the process of growth.
In the Yi King, the fiery part of Earth is represented by the 62nd hexagram, Hsiao Kwo (Preponderance of the Small). The character described is therefore exceedingly complex yet admirably well-knit, but its dangers are indicated by the symbols of Luna and the bird — romance, imagination, but also overweening ambition and the tendency to waste time in idle dreaming.

The Knight of Disks embodies the archetype of the Cultivator — the psychic energy of patient, enduring, productive labour directed toward the most material and tangible forms of creation. Where the Knight of Wands is the lightning flash, the Knight of Disks is the slow geological force — the earthquake, the mountain-building, the patient work of erosion and deposit that shapes continents over millennia.
In Jungian terms, this figure represents the sensation function in its most active mode: the capacity to perceive, engage with, and transform physical reality through sustained, practical effort. The shire horse planted on all four feet (unique among the Knights) shows a fundamental groundedness that the other Knights lack — this energy does not leap or charge but works, steadily and continuously, in contact with the earth at every moment.
The shadow side is a heaviness that can become spiritual deadness: "dull, heavy, and preoccupied with material things." In Jungian terms, this is the individual so identified with the sensation function that the other functions (thinking, feeling, intuition) have atrophied. The world is reduced to what can be touched, measured, and eaten — and the soul's deeper needs go unrecognized.
As the Fiery part of Earth and the letter Yod of the Tetragrammaton in the Disks suit, the Knight represents the activating spark within matter — the hidden fire that drives the slow processes of growth, germination, and physical transformation. In Jungian terms, Yod within Earth is the creative instinct operating at the most material level: the seed's drive to germinate, the body's drive to heal, the craftsman's drive to shape raw material into useful form. This is Fire at its slowest and most patient — not the bonfire but the composting heat that transforms waste into fertile soil.
His zodiacal range — 20° Leo to 20° Virgo — straddles the most creative, solar sign (Leo) and the most meticulous, practical sign (Virgo). Leo's final decan contributes a hidden warmth, ambition, and creative vision that the Knight's stolid exterior conceals; Virgo's first two decans contribute the painstaking attention to detail and the analytical intelligence applied to practical problems. Together they produce the master craftsman — the individual whose work may lack intellectual brilliance but possesses an integrity and a quality that only patient, loving attention to material reality can achieve. The Yi King's warning about "overweening ambition" and "idle dreaming" reveals the surprising inner life of this apparently simple figure: beneath the farmer's exterior, there burns a Leo's fire.
The Knight of Disks in psychological work signals a moment for patient, practical effort — the time to work with one's hands, to tend the garden, to build something real and lasting through sustained, unglamorous labour.
