The Knight of Swords represents the fiery part of Air — he is the wind, the storm. He represents the violent power of motion applied to an apparently manageable element.
- The Revolving Wing Crest: He is a warrior, helmed, and for his crest he bears a revolving wing — the intellect spinning at maximum velocity, generating its own momentum.
- The Maddened Steed: Mounted upon a maddened steed, he drives down the Heavens, the Spirit of the Tempest. The horse is not controlled but ridden — the intellectual energy has taken on a life of its own.
- The Sword and Poniard: In one hand is a sword, in the other a poniard (dagger). He represents the idea of attack — not defence, not strategy, but pure, aggressive intellectual assault.

The Knight of Swords represents the fiery part of Air. He rules from the 20th degree of Taurus to the 20th degree of Gemini. As the Yod of the Tetragrammaton in the suit of Air, he is the initial, explosive aspect of the intellectual element — the sudden surge of thought that initiates all mental activity.
The moral qualities of a person thus indicated are activity and skill, subtlety and cleverness. He is fierce, delicate, and courageous, but altogether the prey of his idea, which comes to him as an inspiration without reflection.
If ill-dignified, the vigour in all these qualities being absent, he is incapable of decision or purpose. Any action that he takes is easily brushed aside by opposition. Inadequate violence spells futility — chimaera bombinans in vacuo.
In the Yi King, the fiery part of Air is represented by the 32nd hexagram, Hang (Duration, Long Continuance). The image of the extended flame of mind, as Zoroaster calls it, may well be subjoined: it is the True Will exploding the mind spontaneously. The influence of Taurus makes for steadiness, and that of the first decan of Gemini for inspiration.

英文原文 · English source
The Knight of Swords embodies the archetype of the Intellectual Berserker — the psychic energy of pure, aggressive thought before it has been tempered by experience, feeling, or practical consequence. He is the thinking function in its most explosive and uncompromising form: the flash of insight that cuts through every complexity, the argument that demolishes every objection, the idea that seizes the mind and drives it forward at maximum speed.
Psychologically, this figure represents those moments when the Ego is possessed by an idea with such force that all other considerations are swept aside. The individual becomes a vehicle for a single, blazing intellectual conviction — brilliant, irresistible, and completely unable to see anything beyond its own momentum. The "maddened steed" is the mind itself, no longer under the rider's control but carrying him forward by the sheer power of its own excitement.
The shadow side is devastating: "altogether the prey of his idea, which comes to him as an inspiration without reflection." In Jungian terms, this is possession by a thought-complex — the state in which an idea has taken on autonomous life within the psyche and is using the Ego as its instrument rather than the reverse. The individual feels brilliant and invincible, but they are in fact being ridden by their own thought, not riding it.
As the Fiery part of Air and the letter Yod of the Tetragrammaton in the Swords suit, the Knight represents the initial spark of intellect — the moment thought first ignites. In Jungian terms, Yod within Air is the creative impulse operating within the realm of logos: the aggressive, penetrating, masculine principle attempting to act through the fluid, discriminating element of the mind. Fire in Air is the storm, the tempest — thought at maximum velocity and minimum stability. The double-weaponry (sword and dagger) shows the Knight's commitment to intellectual attack from every angle: the long sword of formal argument and the short dagger of wit, irony, and sudden reversal.
His zodiacal range — 20° Taurus to 20° Gemini — provides an unexpected anchor. Taurus' final decan contributes an element of steadiness and earthly determination that prevents the Knight from being entirely insubstantial. Gemini's first two decans contribute intellectual brilliance, versatility, and the inspired capacity to make connections between disparate ideas. Together they produce a figure who is simultaneously stubborn (Taurus) and mercurial (Gemini) — the thinker who seizes upon an idea with Taurean tenacity and pursues it with Geminian agility. The Yi King's hexagram Hang (Duration) confirms this paradox: what appears to be pure intellectual violence is, at its best, "the True Will exploding the mind spontaneously" — sustained, directed, and purposeful mental energy.
The Knight of Swords in psychological work signals a moment of intense intellectual energy and insight — but warns that thought without feeling is a sword that cuts the wielder as readily as the opponent.
