The number Nine (Yesod) brings back the Energy to the central pillar of the Tree of Life. The previous disorder is now rectified — but the general idea of the suit has been constantly degenerating. The Swords no longer represent pure intellect so much as the automatic stirring of heartless passions.
- The Nine Jagged, Rusty Swords: Nine swords of varying lengths, all striking downwards to a point. They are jagged and rusty — the once-bright weapons of the intellect have corroded into instruments of cruelty.
- The Poison and Blood: Poison and blood drip from their blades — thought has become toxic, every word a weapon, every analysis an act of aggression.

英文原文 · English source
The Nine of Swords is called Cruelty. Consciousness has fallen into a realm unenlightened by reason. This is the world of the unconscious primitive instincts, of the psychopath, of the fanatic.
The celestial ruler is Mars in Gemini — crude rage of hunger operating without restraint, although its form is intellectual. It is the temper of the Inquisitor. There is, however, a way of dealing with this card: the way of passive resistance, resignation, the acceptance of martyrdom. Nor is an alien formula that of implacable revenge.

The Nine of Swords represents the archetype of Intellectual Cruelty — the psychological state in which the thinking function has been completely severed from feeling and has become an autonomous, mechanical instrument of destruction. The mind still operates, but it operates without conscience: every thought is a blade, every analysis a wound, every word a weapon deployed with surgical precision and zero compassion.
In Jungian terms, this is the shadow of the thinking function at its most terrifying: the intellect that has become a servant of unconscious aggression. The "automatic stirring of heartless passions" describes the state in which the mind is no longer thinking about something but is being used by something — a complex, a resentment, a drive for revenge — as its instrument. The Inquisitor is the perfect archetype: the individual who uses intellectual rigour not to discover truth but to justify cruelty, who employs logic not to illuminate but to condemn.
As the Yesod (Foundation) card of the Swords suit, the Nine represents Air grounded in the unconscious foundation of the psyche. In Jungian terms, Yesod in Air is the point where thinking has become instinctual — operating below the threshold of conscious control, driven by the dark, lunar energies of the unconscious. The Nine "brings back the Energy to the central pillar" — the thinking function has been stabilized, but stabilized in its most degraded form. The cruelty is not chaotic (like the Five's defeat) but systematic — organized, persistent, and deeply rooted in the personality's foundation.
Mars in Gemini combines the raw, aggressive energy of Mars with the intellectual versatility and communicative power of Gemini. In Jungian terms, this is the aggressive instinct operating through the medium of language and thought — the individual whose cruelty is not physical but verbal, not impulsive but articulate. Mars in Gemini produces the cutting remark, the devastating critique, the argument designed not to persuade but to destroy. The "crude rage of hunger" operates "in intellectual form" — the animal aggression has been sublimated into language, which makes it more dangerous, not less.
The two remedies Crowley mentions — "passive resistance" and "implacable revenge" — correspond in Jungian terms to the two possible responses to being possessed by the shadow of the thinking function: either the Ego accepts the suffering and refuses to participate in the cruelty (the way of the martyr), or it confronts the shadow directly and turns its own weapons against it (the way of the warrior). Neither is easy; both require an integrity that the card's own nature tends to destroy.
The Nine of Swords in psychological work signals a state of intellectual cruelty — either suffered or inflicted — and the urgent need to reconnect the thinking function with the heart.
