英文原文 · English source

The Prince of Cups represents the airy part of Water — on the one hand, elasticity, volatility, and hydrostatic equilibrium; on the other, the catalytic faculty and the energy of steam. His armour seems rather a growth than a covering, suggesting that his defences are organic rather than artificial.

  • The Eagle Helmet and Eagle Chariot: His helmet is surmounted by an eagle, and his chariot, which resembles a shell, is also drawn by an eagle. The eagle represents the highest, most sublimated aspect of Scorpio — the capacity to soar above the emotional depths rather than being drowned in them.
  • The Tenuous, Almost Gaseous Wings: His wings are tenuous, almost of gas — a reference to his power of volatilization understood in the spiritual sense. He can transform dense emotional material into subtle, refined understanding.
  • The Lotus and the Serpent Cup: In his right hand he bears a Lotus flower, sacred to the element of Water; in his left hand is a cup from which issues a serpent — the hidden, transformative power of emotion that most people never see.
  • The Stagnant Lake with Heavy Rain: Beneath his chariot is the calm and stagnant water of a lake upon which rain falls heavily — the external appearance of passivity concealing enormous internal pressure and activity.

英文原文 · English source

The Prince of Cups represents the airy part of Water. He rules from the 20th degree of Libra to the 20th degree of Scorpio. As the Vau of the Tetragrammaton in the suit of Water, he is the intellectual projection of the emotional element — feeling that has been processed by the mind and directed by will.

The moral characteristics of the person pictured in this card are subtlety, secret violence, and craft. He is intensely secret, an artist in all his ways. On the surface he appears calm and imperturbable, but this is a mask of the most intense passion. He is on the surface susceptible to external influences, but he accepts them only to transmute them to the advantage of his secret designs. He is thus completely without conscience in the ordinary sense of the word, and is therefore usually distrusted by his neighbours. They feel they do not, and can never, understand him. Thus he inspires unreasonable fear.

He is in fact perfectly ruthless. He cares intensely for power, wisdom, and his own aims. He feels no responsibility to others, and although his abilities are so immense, he cannot be relied upon to work in harness.

In the Yi King, the airy part of Water is represented by the 61st hexagram, Kung Fu (Inner Truth). This is one of the most important figures in the Yi. Libra going over into Scorpio is of tremendous active, critical energy and weight. To such people, good will, sincerity, and right mating are the essentials of success; their danger is overweening ambition.

英文原文 · English source

The Prince of Cups embodies the archetype of the Alchemist of Emotion — the figure who does not merely feel but transforms feeling into power, insight, and strategic advantage. He is the feeling function that has been seized by the intellect (Air) and refined into an instrument of penetrating psychological understanding.

On the surface he appears calm — the stagnant lake. Beneath, the most intense passions are at work. In Jungian terms, this is the individual who has developed an extraordinary capacity for emotional intelligence in its deepest sense: not the ability to manage feelings for social purposes, but the ability to perceive the hidden emotional currents in any situation and to work with them — or manipulate them — toward a desired outcome. The serpent issuing from the cup is the hidden power of feeling that most people suppress or project: the Prince has learned to hold the serpent, to let it speak, and to use its venom as medicine.

The shadow is formidable: "perfectly ruthless," "without conscience in the ordinary sense," he "inspires unreasonable fear." In Jungian terms, this is the individual whose mastery of the feeling function has become disconnected from relatedness. He understands emotion perfectly but uses that understanding instrumentally, as a tool of power rather than connection. This is the dark therapist, the emotional manipulator, the seducer who knows exactly what others feel and exploits it without compunction.

As the Airy part of Water and the letter Vau of the Tetragrammaton in the Cups suit, the Prince represents thought (Air) operating within the domain of feeling (Water). Vau is the Nail — the connector — and the Prince's function is to articulate the emotional energy that the Knight initiated and the Queen received, projecting it outward as a coherent force. In Jungian terms, he is the animus at its most developed within the feminine realm: the capacity to give intellectual structure to emotional experience, to name what is felt, and to direct feeling strategically. The "energy of steam" Crowley attributes to him captures this precisely: water heated by fire becomes a force capable of driving engines — emotion processed by intellect becomes power.

His zodiacal range — 20° Libra to 20° Scorpio — is psychologically the most intense transition in the zodiac. Libra's last decan contributes aesthetic refinement, a need for balance, and the capacity for strategic partnership. Scorpio's first two decans contribute depth, secrecy, the fascination with power and transformation, and the ruthless honesty that looks into the abyss without flinching. Together they produce a figure of extraordinary psychological depth and complexity — the individual who can weigh every option with Libran precision and then act with Scorpionic decisiveness. The Yi King's hexagram Kung Fu (Inner Truth) reveals the paradox at the heart of this card: the Prince's greatest power lies not in his ruthlessness but in his sincerity — when he aligns his formidable abilities with genuine truth, the results are extraordinary.

The Prince of Cups in psychological work signals a moment of deep emotional intelligence and strategic clarity — but warns that the power to understand others' feelings carries the responsibility not to weaponize that understanding.
