英文原文 · English source

This card represents the airy part of Air. With its particular interpretation it is intellectual — it is a picture of the Mind as such. The figure is clothed with closely woven armour adorned with definite devices, and his chariot suggests geometrical ideas.

  • The Winged Children Drawing the Chariot: The chariot is drawn by winged children looking and leaping irresponsibly in any direction that takes their fancy; they are not reined but perfectly capricious. The chariot consequently is easy enough to move but quite unable to progress in any definite direction except by accident — a perfect picture of the Mind.
  • The Radiant Child's Head: On his head is nevertheless a child's head, radiant, for there is a secret crown in the nature of this card: if concentrated, it is exactly Tiphareth — the hint that this scattered brilliance, if focused, could achieve the Sun.
  • The Sword and the Sickle: In his right hand is a lifted sword, wherewith to create; but in his left hand, a sickle, so that what he creates he instantly destroys.
  • The Geometric Patterns: His logical mental processes have reduced the Air (his element) to many diverse geometrical patterns, but in these there is no real plan — they are demonstrations of the powers of the Mind without definite purpose.

英文原文 · English source

The Prince of Swords represents the airy part of Air. He rules from the 20th degree of Capricorn to the 20th degree of Aquarius. As the Vau of the Tetragrammaton in the suit of Air, he is the intellectual projection of the intellectual element — thought thinking about thought.

A person thus symbolized is purely intellectual. He is full of ideas and designs which tumble over each other. He is a mass of fine ideals unrelated to practical effort. He has all the apparatus of Thought in the highest degree, intensely clever, admirably rational, but unstable of purpose and in reality indifferent even to his own ideas, as knowing that any one of them is just as good as any other. He reduces everything to unreality by removing its substance and transmuting it to an ideal world of ratiocination which is purely formal and out of relation to any facts, even those upon which it is based.

In the Yi King, the airy part of Air is represented by the 57th hexagram, Sun (Flexibility, Penetration). Immensely powerful because of its complete freedom from settled principles, capable of maintaining and putting forward any conceivable argument.

荣格视角

英文原文 · English source

The Prince of Swords embodies the archetype of Pure Intellect — the mind reflecting upon itself in an endless recursive loop of analysis, argument, and abstraction. He is the thinking function operating within its own element without any counterbalance from feeling, sensation, or intuition — and the result is a dazzling, brilliant, and ultimately sterile display of mental power.

The winged children drawing the chariot in random directions are one of the most psychologically acute images in the Thoth deck. In Jungian terms, they represent the autonomous complexes of the intellectual mind — each idea, each argument, each train of thought pulling the personality in a different direction, with none having authority over the others. The chariot "is easy enough to move but quite unable to progress in any definite direction" — a perfect image of the individual who can think brilliantly about anything but cannot commit to anything, because commitment would require the involvement of a function (feeling, will) that the pure intellect cannot supply.

The sword and sickle together — creating and destroying simultaneously — represent the fundamental paradox of ungrounded thought: every thesis generates its antithesis, every argument implies its refutation, every position is immediately undermined by the awareness that the opposite position is equally defensible. In Jungian terms, this is the puer intellectualis — the eternal adolescent of the mind who avoids the death of commitment by keeping all options perpetually open.

As the Airy part of Air and the letter Vau of the Tetragrammaton in the Swords suit, the Prince represents thought doubled — intellect reflecting upon intellect. Vau is the Nail, the connector — but what the Prince connects is only ideas to other ideas, never ideas to reality. In Jungian terms, he is the logos function operating in a closed loop: the capacity for rational analysis spinning freely without the friction of the material world to give it traction. The "secret crown" of the radiant child's head — "if concentrated, it is exactly Tiphareth" — reveals the redemptive possibility: if this scattered brilliance could be focused by will and grounded by feeling, it would achieve genuine illumination.

His zodiacal range — 20° Capricorn to 20° Aquarius — straddles the most materially ambitious sign (Capricorn) and the most intellectually revolutionary sign (Aquarius). Capricorn's final decan contributes structural ambition and the desire to build systems; Aquarius' first two decans contribute visionary brilliance and the capacity to perceive the patterns that connect all things. Together they produce the individual who can see the architecture of reality with extraordinary clarity but who treats that vision as an intellectual exercise rather than a call to action. The Yi King's hexagram Sun (Penetration, Flexibility) captures the essence: this mind can penetrate anything but settles on nothing.

The Prince of Swords in psychological work signals a moment of exceptional mental activity and intellectual power — but warns that thought without commitment is a sword that creates and destroys in the same stroke.
