英文原文 · English source

The Princess of Cups represents the earthy part of Water — in particular, the faculty of crystallization. She represents the power of Water to give substance to idea, to support life, and to form the basis of chemical combination.

  • The Dancing Figure in Crystalline Robes: She is represented as a dancing figure, robed in a flowing garment on whose edges crystals are seen to form. The dance is the movement of Water; the crystals are its capacity to solidify, to give permanent form to what is fluid.
  • The Swan Crest: For her crest she wears a swan with open wings. The swan in oriental philosophy is the symbol of AUM — the Word that represents the entire process of creation. She is the creative word made flesh through the medium of water.
  • The Covered Cup with the Tortoise: She bears a covered cup from which issues a tortoise — the tortoise which in Hindu philosophy supports the elephant on whose back is the Universe. She carries, concealed within her emotional nature, the foundation of all things.
  • The Foaming Sea and the Dolphin: She is dancing upon a foaming sea in which disports himself a dolphin — the royal fish, symbolizing the power of Creation itself, leaping joyfully in its element.

The Princess of Cups represents the earthy part of Water. As the final Heh of the Tetragrammaton in the suit of Water, she is the ultimate materialization of the emotional element — feeling that has descended all the way into the body, into matter, into tangible reality.

The character of the Princess is infinitely gracious. All sweetness, all voluptuousness, gentleness, kindness, and tenderness are in her character. She lives in the world of Romance, in the perpetual dream of rapture. On a superficial examination she might be thought selfish and indolent, but this is a quite false impression; silently and effortlessly she goes about her work.

In the Yi King, the earthy part of Water is represented by the 41st hexagram, Sun (Diminution). This means the dissolution of all solidity. People described by this card are very dependent on others, but at the same time helpful to them. Rarely at the best are they of individual importance. As helpmates they are unsurpassed.

英文原文 · English source

The Princess of Cups embodies the archetype of the Undine — the water-spirit who gives emotional experience its most tangible, embodied, and sensually real form. Where the Queen reflects feeling and the Prince transforms it, the Princess incarnates it: she is the moment when emotion becomes a physical sensation, a tear, a caress, a shiver of pleasure, a pang of longing felt in the body.

In Jungian terms, the Princess represents the sensation function operating within the realm of feeling — the capacity to experience emotion not as an abstract state but as a concrete, physical, sensory event. Her crystals forming at the edges of her garment capture this: the fluid element of Water is precipitating into solid form, dream is crystallizing into reality. The tortoise emerging from her covered cup is the oldest symbol of patient, stable, enduring foundation — reminding us that the most solid and lasting things in the world (relationships, families, homes) are built on the crystallization of feeling.

The shadow is dependency and the loss of individual identity. Crowley's observation that "rarely at the best are they of individual importance" reflects the Jungian danger of the feeling function wholly absorbed in the service of others — the individual who exists only in relationship, whose identity dissolves the moment they are alone. The "perpetual dream of rapture" can become a narcotic, insulating the Princess from the harsher realities that her nature cannot tolerate.

As the Earthy part of Water and the final Heh of the Tetragrammaton in the Cups suit, the Princess represents feeling at its most material and irreversible. In Jungian terms, the final Heh is the point where the creative cycle completes itself in manifestation — and in the Cups suit, this means the moment when an emotion stops being a passing mood and becomes a fact of life: a commitment, a bond, a child, a home. The swan of AUM on her crest connects this materialization to the primordial creative Word — suggesting that the most mundane acts of emotional embodiment (cooking a meal for someone you love, holding a crying friend, the physical tenderness between partners) are, at their deepest level, acts of cosmic creation.

The Princess has no zodiacal attribution — she rules a quadrant of the Heavens outside the ordered zodiac. Psychologically, this means she operates below the threshold of the personality's structured emotional development. She is the raw capacity for emotional presence — the ability to simply be here, in the body, in the feeling, without interpretation or strategy. The Yi King's hexagram Sun (Diminution) describes the dissolution of all solidity — which seems paradoxical for the "earthy" Princess, but captures the essential truth that her solidity comes precisely from her willingness to let go, to dissolve the Ego's defences and be fully present to the emotional moment.

The Princess of Cups in psychological work signals the invitation to embody feeling fully — to let emotion become real, physical, tangible — while maintaining enough selfhood to remain a distinct person rather than dissolving entirely into the other.
