The Queen of Cups represents the watery part of Water — its power of reception and reflection. Her image is of extreme purity and beauty, with infinite subtlety; to see the Truth of her is hardly possible, for she reflects the nature of the observer in great perfection.
- The Still Water Throne: She is represented as enthroned upon still water. The seas upon which she is enthroned convey the almost unbroken images of the image which she represents — mirror upon mirror, reflection within reflection.
- The Shell-Like Cup with the Crayfish: In her hands she bears a shell-like cup from which issues a crayfish — a creature of the deep, emerging from the vessel of feeling. The shell-cup suggests the oceanic origin of all emotion.
- The Lotus of Isis: She bears also the Lotus of Isis, of the Great Mother — the flower of receptivity that opens to the light while rooted in the dark water.
- The Endless Curves of Light: She is robed in and veiled by endless curves of light — not direct, linear illumination but refracted, reflected, endlessly mirrored radiance. She is clothed in the quality she embodies.

The Queen of Cups represents the watery part of Water. In the Zodiac it rules from the 20th degree of Gemini to the 20th degree of Cancer. As the first Heh of the Tetragrammaton in the suit of Water, she is the receptive, containing, and sustaining function of the emotional element.
The characteristics associated with this card are principally dreaminess, illusion, and tranquillity. She is the perfect agent and patient, able to receive and transmit everything without herself being affected thereby. If ill-dignified, all these qualities are degraded — everything that passes through her is refracted and distorted. But speaking generally, her characteristics depend mostly upon the influences which affect her.
In the Yi King, the watery part of Water is represented by the 58th hexagram, Tui (The Joyous, Lake). The commentary consists of mild exhortations on the subject of pleasure. It may really be said that normally people of this type have no character at all of their own, unless it can be called a characteristic to be at the disposition of every impact or impression. There is, however, a hint that the chief pleasure of people of this type is to lead and attract others.

The Queen of Cups embodies the archetype of the Mirror — the psychic function of pure, undistorted reception and reflection. She is the Anima in its most transparent form: not a figure with her own agenda but a living surface that reflects back to the observer the truth of their own emotional nature.
In Jungian terms, the Queen of Cups represents the feeling function operating in its own element without interference from thinking, sensation, or intuition. The result is a capacity for emotional reception so perfect that it appears supernatural — she knows what others feel, not through analysis or empathy in the ordinary sense, but because she becomes a mirror in which their feelings see themselves. The endless curves of light that clothe her are the refractions of other people's emotional projections: she is perpetually surrounded by what others project onto her.
The shadow is the absence of a distinct self. Crowley's observation that "people of this type have no character at all of their own" is psychologically precise: the individual who is wholly identified with the receptive function becomes a psychological chameleon, taking on the coloring of whoever is nearest. In Jungian terms, this is the negative Anima — the feminine principle that has become so permeable that it cannot distinguish its own feelings from the feelings of others. The crayfish emerging from the cup is the creature of the deep — the content of the unconscious that surfaces in this perfectly still, perfectly receptive medium.
As the Watery part of Water and the first Heh of the Tetragrammaton in the Cups suit, the Queen represents receptivity doubled — the container containing itself, the mirror mirroring the mirror. In Jungian terms, this is the unconscious reflected in itself: the deepest layer of the psyche where subject and object have not yet separated, where the feeler and the feeling are indistinguishable. This gives the Queen her quality of "extreme purity and beauty" — she is undiluted by any element foreign to her nature — but also her quality of illusion, for in a hall of mirrors, it becomes impossible to tell which reflection is the original.
Her zodiacal range — 20° Gemini to 20° Cancer — straddles the most mercurial, communicative sign (Gemini) and the most nurturing, self-protective sign (Cancer). Gemini contributes the capacity to articulate and transmit emotional content — the Queen does not merely feel, she communicates feeling with extraordinary fluency. Cancer contributes the maternal, containing quality — the capacity to hold emotional space for others without collapsing. Together they produce the archetypal counsellor, therapist, or confessor: the individual to whom others instinctively bring their emotional burdens, knowing they will be received without judgment. The Yi King's hexagram Tui (Joyous Lake) adds the dimension of pleasure: at her best, the Queen's receptivity creates an atmosphere of ease and delight in which all things can surface safely.
The Queen of Cups in psychological work signals a moment of deep emotional receptivity — the capacity to receive, hold, and reflect the feelings of self and others. The warning is to maintain the boundary between reception and absorption: the mirror must not become the thing it reflects.
