Tiphareth shows the full establishment and balance of the idea of the suit. This is particularly the case with this card, as the intellect itself is also referred to the number Six. Mercury in Aquarius represents the celestial Energy influencing the Kerub of the Man, thus showing intelligence and humanity.
- The Ornamental Hilts in Hexagram Form: The hilts of the Swords, which are very ornamental, are in the form of the hexagram — the Star of David, the symbol of the balanced union of macrocosm and microcosm.
- The Red Rose on the Golden Cross: Their points touch the outer petals of a red rose upon a golden cross of six squares, thus showing the Rosy Cross as the central secret of scientific truth.
- The Perfect Balance: The perfect balance of all mental and moral faculties, hardly won and almost impossible to hold in an ever-changing world, declares the idea of Science in its fullest interpretation.

The Six of Swords is called Science. But there is much more than this in the symbol. The perfect balance of all mental and moral faculties, hardly won and almost impossible to hold in an ever-changing world, declares the idea of Science in its fullest interpretation.
Mercury in Aquarius represents the celestial Energy influencing the Kerub of the Man — showing intelligence and humanity combined. The Rosy Cross at the centre is the secret of scientific truth: the recognition that genuine knowledge requires both the cross of material investigation and the rose of spiritual illumination.

The Six of Swords represents the archetype of Integrated Understanding — the psychological state in which the intellect achieves its fullest, most balanced, and most humane expression. After the sorrow of the Three, the convention of the Four, and the defeat of the Five, the mind has been tested, humbled, and refined — and now achieves the genuine clarity that only earned wisdom can provide.
In Jungian terms, the Six of Swords is the thinking function operating at Tiphareth — the Sun, the centre of the personality. This is not mere cleverness or analytical skill but Science in Crowley's fullest sense: the integration of observation, theory, intuition, and moral responsibility into a unified way of knowing. The Rosy Cross at the centre shows that genuine intellectual achievement requires both the cross of disciplined investigation (the scientific method, the willingness to test and be tested) and the rose of meaning (the recognition that knowledge without purpose is sterile).
As the Tiphareth (Beauty) card of the Swords suit, the Six occupies the absolute centre of the Tree of Life within the domain of thought. In Jungian terms, Tiphareth in Air is the Self experienced as understanding: the moment when the Ego's intellectual activity aligns with the Self's deeper wisdom, producing insight that is simultaneously logical and luminous. The hexagram-shaped hilts show the marriage of opposites within the mind: above and below, theory and practice, abstract and concrete, all held in dynamic equilibrium.
Mercury in Aquarius is one of the most intellectually powerful configurations: the planet of thought, communication, and analysis operating through the sign of universal vision, humanitarian idealism, and original thinking. In Jungian terms, Mercury provides the mechanism of thought — the speed, precision, and versatility — while Aquarius provides the scope: the capacity to think not just about personal problems but about the structure of reality itself. Together they produce the archetype of the true scientist, the genuine philosopher: the individual whose thinking is both rigorous and visionary, both precise and humane.
The Six of Swords in psychological work signals a moment of genuine intellectual achievement and clarity — the mind operating at its best, balanced between analysis and intuition, between rigour and compassion. It is "hardly won and almost impossible to hold" — a reminder that this state requires constant vigilance.
