英文原文 · English source
The number Ten refers to Malkuth, which depends from the other nine Sephiroth but is not directly in communication with them. It shows the Force detached from its spiritual sources — a blind Force, the most violent form of that particular energy, without any modifying influences.
- The Eight Crossed Wands with Claws: The eight Wands are still crossed, showing the enormous power of the completed energies of Fire, but they have lost their patents of nobility. Their ends seem more like claws — they lack the authority and intelligence shown in the earlier cards.
- The Two Dorjes Become Bars: In front are the two formidable Dorjes of the Two of Wands, but lengthened to bars. What was once the thunderbolt of pure will has become a prison bar — dominion has degenerated into oppression.
- The Wild Flames: The flames in the background have run wild. It is Fire in its most destructive aspect — energy that has lost all connection to its purpose and now burns indiscriminately.

The Ten of Wands is called Oppression. The card refers to the influence of Saturn in Sagittarius. Here is the greatest antipathy: Sagittarius is spiritual, swift, light, elusive, and luminous; Saturn is material, slow, heavy, obstinate, and obscure.
The whole picture suggests Oppression and repression. It is a stupid and obstinate cruelty from which there is no escape. It is a Will which has not understood anything beyond its dull purpose, its lust of result, and will devour itself in the conflagrations it has evoked. The energy of Fire, having descended all the way to Malkuth without maintaining its connection to spirit, has become a blind, crushing force.

The Ten of Wands represents the archetype of Blind Compulsion — psychic energy that has become completely disconnected from its spiritual source and operates as a mechanical, crushing, self-perpetuating force. In Jungian terms, this is the complex that has taken over the personality: a pattern of will and action that was once purposeful but has become autonomous, running on its own momentum without reference to the Self's deeper intentions.
The Dorjes of the Two — once the thunderbolts of pure, exalted will — have lengthened into prison bars. This is the most devastating image in the Wands suit: the very energy that began as liberation (Dominion) has, through its descent into matter without spiritual guidance, become the instrument of its own imprisonment. Psychologically, this is the workaholic who has forgotten why they work, the revolutionary who has become the tyrant, the passionate artist who has become the slave of their own success.
As the Malkuth (Kingdom) card of the Wands suit, the Ten represents Fire at its most material, dense, and disconnected from spirit. In Jungian terms, Malkuth is the physical world — the realm of concrete manifestation where psychic energy encounters the full resistance of matter. When Fire reaches Malkuth without maintaining its connection to the upper Sephiroth, the result is energy that is enormously powerful but utterly blind. The card "depends from the other nine Sephiroth but is not directly in communication with them" — meaning the individual's actions are still powered by the accumulated force of their entire creative history, but they have lost conscious access to the meaning of that force. They act from habit, from compulsion, from the sheer momentum of will, but the soul has departed from the enterprise.
Saturn in Sagittarius is an astrological configuration of maximum internal contradiction. Sagittarius is the Archer — swift, spiritual, free, aiming at the highest target. Saturn is the Taskmaster — slow, material, binding, focused on the lowest common denominator. In Jungian terms, this combination produces the experience of a spiritual vision crushed by material reality: the individual who once aimed at the stars now finds themselves ground down by obligations, systems, and structures that their own ambition created. Saturn does not destroy the Sagittarian vision — it weighs it down until it can no longer fly. The "stupid and obstinate cruelty" Crowley describes is the cruelty of a will that has forgotten its own purpose: it continues to exert force not because it has a goal but because it knows nothing else. The card warns that energy without consciousness is not strength but tyranny — and the tyrant's first victim is always himself.
The Ten of Wands in psychological work signals a state of burnout, oppression, or compulsive overwork — the urgent need to reconnect with the original purpose and meaning that the energy has lost.
