The Two always represents the Word and the Will. It is the first manifestation. Therefore, in the suit of Water, it must refer to Love, which recovers unity from dividuality by mutual annihilation.

• The Two Overflowing Cups: In the foreground are two cups overflowing upon a calm sea. They are filled with lucent water from a lotus floating upon the sea — the love flows from a common, sacred source.
• The Rising Lotus with Twin Dolphins: From the sea rises another lotus, around whose stem are entwined twin dolphins. The dolphin is peculiarly sacred to Alchemy — the "Royal Art" — and represents the creative, playful intelligence of the emotional depths.
• The Calm Sea: The background is a calm, luminous sea — no storm, no conflict, only the pure, placid radiance of feeling in its most harmonious state.

The Two of Cups is called Love. The card refers to Venus in Cancer. Cancer is more than any other the receptive Sign; it is the House of the Moon, and in that Sign Jupiter is exalted. These are superficially the three most friendly of the planets.

This card might really be renamed the Lord of Love under Will, for that is its full and true meaning. It shows the harmony of the male and the female interpreted in the largest sense. It is perfect and placid harmony, radiating an intensity of joy and ecstasy.

The number Two referring to Will: the Two always represents the Word and the Will, the first manifestation. In the suit of Water, this first manifestation is Love — which recovers unity from dividuality by mutual annihilation. Of necessity, the realization of the idea in the Four (as the suit develops) will gradually diminish the purity of its perfection.

The Two of Cups represents the archetype of Sacred Union — the psychological experience of love in its purest, most undiluted form, before it has been complicated by possession, jealousy, disappointment, or the slow erosion of familiarity. It is the coniunctio experienced not as an alchemical operation (as in Atu XIV, Art) but as a simple, immediate, overwhelming feeling: the moment two souls recognize each other and the boundary between them dissolves.

In Jungian terms, the Two of Cups is the projection of the Anima/Animus at its most numinous — the experience of encountering another person (or a creative work, or a landscape, or an idea) and feeling that the missing half of oneself has been found. The "mutual annihilation" Crowley describes is the temporary dissolution of the Ego's boundaries in the oceanic experience of love. This is not pathological merger but the genuine, if transient, experience of unity that Jung recognized as the psychological reality behind the mystical traditions of divine marriage.

As the Chokmah (Wisdom) card of the Cups suit, the Two represents the first real manifestation of Water — the moment when the abstract capacity for feeling (the Ace) crystallizes into a definite, living emotion. In Jungian terms, Chokmah is the initial flash of awareness — and in the Cups suit, this flash is the lightning bolt of recognition that occurs when love strikes. Chokmah is "uncontaminated by any influence," meaning the love expressed here is pure, original, and untouched by the compromises that relationship will eventually require. It is love at the moment of ignition, before reality has had time to intervene.

Venus in Cancer is one of the most emotionally nurturing configurations in astrology. Venus provides the principle of attraction and beauty — the magnetism that draws two beings together. Cancer provides the principle of containment and nourishment — the capacity to create a safe, warm, protected space in which love can grow. In Jungian terms, Venus is the Anima's allure and Cancer is the Mother's embrace: together they create the experience of being utterly welcomed, utterly safe, utterly cherished. Jupiter's exaltation in Cancer adds the dimension of meaning — this is not mere pleasure but meaningful pleasure, love that expands the soul. The twin dolphins playing around the lotus stem are the alchemical symbol of this union: two creative intelligences circling a shared source, each reflecting the other in an endless spiral of mutual delight.

The Two of Cups in psychological work signals the arrival of love, connection, or deep emotional harmony — but carries the implicit awareness that this perfection is the beginning of a process, not its conclusion. The purity will inevitably be tested as it descends further into manifestation.
