This card, pertaining to Chokmah in the suit of Fire, represents the Will in its most exalted form — an ideal Will, independent of any given object.

  • The Two Crossed Dorjes: The pictorial representation is two Dorjes (Tibetan thunderbolts) crossed — the emblem of celestial Power, but more in its destructive than its creative form. Destruction may be regarded as the first step in the creative process: the virgin ovum must be broken in order to fertilize it. Fear and repulsion are therefore the primary reaction to the assault; then, with understanding of the complete plan, willing surrender rejoices to cooperate.
  • The Six Flames: Six flames issue from the centre, indicating the influence of the Sun, who is exalted in Aries. This is the creative Will — solar energy channelled through the martial impulse to act.
  • The Background of Mars in Aries: The background shows the power of Mars in his own sign Aries, the first of the signs. It represents Energy initiating a Current of Force — the very first stroke of manifestation.

The Two of Wands is called the Lord of Dominion and represents the energy of Fire — Fire in its best and highest form. These cards refer to Chokmah: from the point of view of the ordinary person, Chokmah is really Number 2 and not Number 1, because he is the first manifestation (Kether is so completely concealed that nobody knows anything about it at all). Hence only on reaching the Deuces does an element appear as the element itself. Chokmah is uncontaminated by any influence; therefore the elements here appear in their original, harmonious condition.

The Will is expressed in its purest form: "For pure will, unassuaged of purpose, delivered from the lust of result, is every way perfect" (AL I:44). Mars in Aries shows this energy at its most initiatory — the thunderbolt that shatters the old to make way for the new.

The Geomantic figure Puer (the Boy) is attributed to Mars in Aries, reinforcing the quality of youthful, aggressive, forward-thrusting energy.

The Two of Wands represents the archetype of Pure Will — the moment when undifferentiated libido (the Ace) first takes on direction and becomes intention. It is the psychological experience of knowing what one wants before knowing why, or how, or whether it is wise.

The crossed Dorjes — thunderbolts of destruction — point to an essential Jungian insight: every act of will is simultaneously an act of destruction. To choose one path is to annihilate all others. To create something new, the existing order must be broken. This is why the card is called Dominion rather than Creation: true will asserts sovereignty over reality by refusing to accept it as it is.

Crowley's invocation of "pure will, unassuaged of purpose, delivered from the lust of result" describes what Jung would recognize as the Ego aligned with the Self — acting not from personal desire or neurotic compulsion, but from a deeper centre that transcends the individual's conscious understanding of their own motives. This is the will that feels inevitable rather than chosen.

As the Chokmah (Wisdom) card of the Wands suit, the Two represents the first real manifestation of Fire — the moment when the abstract potential of the Ace crystallizes into a definite force. In Jungian terms, Chokmah is the Self's first act of self-expression: the primordial "I AM" that precedes all differentiation. The Two of Wands is this declaration made in the language of will and fire — the psyche's first assertion of its own existence as a creative agent. Chokmah is "uncontaminated by any influence," meaning the will expressed here is not yet complicated by doubt, compromise, or the resistance of reality. It is pure, original, and whole.

Mars in Aries is the most intensely initiating configuration in astrology — the god of war in his own sign, at maximum potency. In Jungian terms, this represents the aggressive instinct at its most primal and purposeful: not anger directed at a target, but the fundamental thrust of the life-force outward into the world. The Geomantic figure Puer (the Boy) reinforces the Jungian connection to the Puer Aeternus archetype — but here it is the Puer at his healthiest, before inflation or indecision have set in. He is the pure impulse to act, uncorrupted by experience.

The shadow danger is inflation: Mars in Aries is the most aggressive possible configuration, and the Ego can easily mistake its own appetites for cosmic imperative. The Two of Wands in psychological work signals the crystallization of intention — powerful, clean, and directional — but reminds that dominion over oneself must precede dominion over anything else.
