Binah is Understanding — the 3rd Sephirah, the great dark Sea, the supernal Mother who receives the force of Chokmah and gives it form. She is Maat, Isis, the Virgin Mary — the feminine principle in its most exalted and terrible aspect. She is Saturn because form requires limitation: to become something specific, energy must accept the boundary of what it is not. Saturn's rings, time, structure, the womb and the tomb — all expressions of the same principle that creation and constraint are inseparable.

As the first Sephirah on the Pillar of Severity, Binah represents the receptive, feminine, form-giving principle. The four Threes reside here — the first stable structures of each element, the triangle formulated, the idea fertilised and pregnant with manifestation.

Jungian Meaning: Binah completes the Supernal Triad — the three Sephiroth above the Abyss. She is the Collective Unconscious in its most primordial aspect — the dark matrix from which all specific forms emerge. She is "dark" not because she is evil but because form-giving operates beneath awareness: we never witness the moment an archetype crystallises into an image, only the image itself. This is why Binah is called Understanding rather than Knowledge — understanding grasps the pattern behind appearances, the structural law that shapes experience before the ego encounters it. Developmentally, Binah is the psyche's first capacity to organise: the infant's dawning ability to sort the chaos of sensation into "mother," "hunger," "warmth" — raw Chokmah-energy constrained into categories that make experience survivable. The shadow of Binah is structure that has forgotten it serves life — rigidity, dogma, the letter of the law that kills the spirit it was meant to protect.
