Hod is Splendour — the 8th Sephirah, the sphere of Mercury, intellect, language, communication, and the analytical mind. It is thought in its most practical and articulate form — the capacity to name, categorize, and transmit information. Where Netzach feels, Hod explains — and explanation is itself a kind of power, because to name a thing is to gain leverage over it.

As the lowest Sephirah on the Pillar of Severity, Hod represents the discriminating, analytical function at its most concrete level. The four Eights reside here — swiftness, indolence, interference, prudence — the energy refined into intellectual form but showing signs of exhaustion, because analysis by its nature divides and reduces: the more precisely you dissect experience, the further you move from the living whole.

Jungian Meaning: Hod corresponds to the thinking function — the rational mind that organizes, analyzes, and communicates. Together with Netzach (feeling), it forms the pair of functions through which the personality engages with the everyday world — one evaluates, the other explains, and healthy functioning requires both. The shadow of Hod is intellect severed from feeling: the mind that can categorize everything and value nothing, clever speech deployed not to illuminate but to evade. Mercury is traditionally both the messenger and the trickster for exactly this reason.
